Hi there

My friend is thinking about upgrading his 8800 512mb and has £200 to spend (Or anything under would be prefered by his misses ;))

Could you recommend me a card for that price? Could you compare its performance to my 280 nvidia so I can tell him what to expect.

1680x1040 res monitor I think.

Thanks.

Those cards are possibly overkill for that Res? I have a Gigabyte GTX460 1GB with a mild overclock and it pushes everything I've thrown at it round the screen without breaking a sweat.

Here is a comparison between gtx275 which is pretty much as fast as the gtx280 with a gtx470. The 6870 is not on there but its speed is pretty much the same as the gtx470.

The main difference between the 2 are that the 6870 uses less power, produces less noise and heat. The gtx470's main strength is it will overclock better than the 6870 from what is known atm. If overclocking is not something you will be doing then the 6870 is the card to buy.

Here is the gtx460 1gb comparison with a gtx275. The 6850 is around the same performance as a gtx460 so use this for a speed comparison.

The gtx460 also is usually a great overclocker and does not suffer usually from heat and noise problems. The 6850 also looks like a great overclocker. If you are not overclocking you may want to get a 6850 as it does use less power but there are some oc models with better coolers in the gtx460 range which are good cards.
