Upgrading from a Celeron

hmm is that an emachines 400 series? i have an emachines 420 here with a 2.6ghz northwood celeron in it. chances are it will be the same motherboard as mine, you can check using the program CPU-z from www.cpuid.com
i'm guessing its a motherboard made by imperial. theyre the same type as used in HP's pavilion pc's.

IIRC the 845 chipset could run all the of the FSB for the SKt 478 processors (400/533/800) however I am not 100% on that. However as bennah has asked what will it actually be used for?

A cele 2.5 is fine for basic apps / internet access / office tasks. Basically everything a computer designed for home use is going to do.

Kind of seems like a upgrade because I can rather than I need to (not that I do that at all  )

The processor is crap, struggles to do anything, and when you do any sort of task the processor is at 100% usage. My g/f wants a Tv card and the processor would not be able to handle it.

Well, I suggest not just to upgrade the cpu then. It wouldnt be worth it. Probably time to get a new rig altogether mate. Just updating the cpu to a few more 100mhz wont done much, its still a celery at the end of the day :p

but if u don't really want to spending too much on upgrading the whole system, i suggest you to get more ram onto the system, how many rams she currently got?

Just sounds like the system needs a good clearing out (resintall of windows).

A celeron isn't *that* bad and it could certainly handle a TV card.

The system came with 256mb

I put in a 512mb stick and it improved it quite a bit.

I might be able to get my hands on a amd 3200 and asus 939 motherboard at quite a good price, It might be better in the long run to do that.

Would be. It would be faster than the celery anyways. Whats the A64 3200+? Venice, Winchester, Newcastle?

Dunno what it is, a mate bought it a few month ago and was gonna build up his own system, couldnt be arsed doing it and he's offered it to me.

Which is the better of they 3 types?

its probably th shed load of crap software they put on it slowing the system down. if you really want to upgrade then save for a new rig. However, make sure that case has a standard atx psu and fitments, becasue otherwise you'll need a new psu and case as well.

oh and venice is the best.

The 845 chipset only supports 400 FSB so upgrading the cpu alone is out of the question.

I would recommend a reload of the system and a new motherboad/cpu/ram. Maybe a Sempron 3100+ / 512MB / Socket 754 motherboard? This can be bought from OcUK for ~£130 inc VAT.

Upgrading the celery aint gunner yeild you not much better performance. Whats the main reason of wanting a fast cpu anyways? Why do you want to do it?

i agree, celerons are'nt that bad, i put one in my daughters pc (2.67) i think,
no noticeable diff with a p4 2.4 533, or a p4 2.4 800, or an lga 775 p4 3.0 800, imo. got all of these in other pcs around the house.

big diff with my pc however, but there should be

A Darkside house ;) Its like just changing your lga775 p4 3.0 to a 3.4. Not going to see much difference, I dont see the point spending the extra money really.
