hi
i would just like to check out everyones opinion before i upgrade. i have a fast mondern computer that works well in xp and i like the look of windows 7 is it worth upgrading. my friends tell me its still worth going to 7. thanks in advance

it's only worth it if:
- you need more than 3gb of ram
- you need dx11
- you want to do a clean install anyway

otherwise save ur money.

windows 7 is fine tho, fairly intuitive. if you just fancy an upgrade for the hell of it, go ahead.

I disagree. XP is outdated and should die a long overdue death. There are too many reasons to switch from XP to W7 I cannot be bothered to list them all. To name a few:
much easier install (ESP. Raid)
Nicer UI
The new taskbar is win
integrated backup
dx11
WMP12
WMC
Go for it mate, if your hardware is up for it of course.

I whole-heartedly agree! If you can afford it and have even just a reasonable hardware spec you should upgrade to 7. It is a modern, secure, efficient OS. XP.... isn't.

upgrading

thanks for all the advice, on the same theme do you all recomend the full version over the upgrade (twenty five pounds cheaper)

The Upgrade version takes on the exact same license as the OS it is upgrading. So, if you are upgrading an OEM version of XP, your new 7 Upgrade will now also be OEM. This mean it is tied to that computer and, legally, you can only ever reinstall it to that machine. You can also never reinstall that copy of XP anywhere else.

You also have the problem of ensuring there is an OS present for you to install the Upgrade version. That is, if the HDD is empty [you have just replaced your HDD for instance] it will not activate after installation. There are [legitimate] ways around this, but it is a hassle.

For an extra £25 [which is not a lot extra to pay for an OS] you can get the Retail version which lets you install it on any one PC at a time and there is no requirement for a previous OS.
