Hiya guys,

My plans up until now were to just put another 290X in my system, get it underwater and be done with it, staying at 1080P for a while..

But it's payday soon and i've found myself caught with a severe upgrade bug,

I'm torn as to which direction to take so looking for advice on what to do.

The only definite is that i will be moving to X99 when released.

So do i:

1) Get another Reference 290X and stay at 1080P untill the move?

2) Stay exactly as i am now and keep the pennies for the move to x99?

3) Get another reference 290X but move to a bigger monitor? (See list)

4) Sell my 290X and get CF 290X Lightnings?

5) Stay put and wait for new AMD or Nvidia cards?

Monitor choices:

Any help would be great.

Cheers Gary,

My only concern with waiting for the new cards is that the performance increase isn't going to be much if it's still 28nm..

Bah!, need to get something, even if it's just a new case, this 630 while decent isn't something that i'd normally go for.

I'm edging towards getting a 4K panel now and making do with 1 290X untill the move to x99.

Get you CPU watercooled?
Gives you a little project plus you can hopefully use the PCU block on the x99 platform?

Bah damn you guys with your sensible options!!!!!

I'' just get a mouse mat then :(:p:p

You've got an upgrade itch? :)

I had a GTX580 on Day 1. I then got so bored waiting for the GTX680 that i side graded to GTX560 448SP (or whatever it was).

The GTX680 came out but for some reason i was so disappointed with the increase over a GTX580 that i didnt bother buying one. Maybe i shouldnt expected so much.So i waited...

..another year for the GTX770/780. Typically the GTX770 felt only partially faster than the GTX680 & while the GTX780 was a fair bit faster I refused to bend over & pay £550 for it (i mean ffs it was only about 15% faster than the £300 GTX770). I could afford it but just refused to line nvidia's pockets. I had a 8800GTX brand new on Day 1 for £440 which was a SERIOUS upgrade from previous gen. I had a 4870x2 on Day 1 for like £370! Nvidia been milking for the last load of years.

So having already waited about 3 years i just got a GTX770. Was never really the upgrade i wanted but i was bored & wanted something new. Been another year now & still waiting for something new from AMD or Nvidia.

I feel the last few years have been disappointing for PC Gamers. No real games pushing much more than Crysis way back in 2007!!! Video card having smaller & smaller performance increases for bigger & bigger prices. Cpu's not really seeming to have much effect on gaming. Just all feels abit "meh!"

Option 2 :D (no really) :)

Make a separate savings account, and make it your mission (thus starving off the upgrade itch) to fill it as much as possible and think about those lovely new motherboards, CPUs and GPUs you'll be able to get when X99 hits the shelves

I'd rather a totally fresh, high end system in one hit rather than small incremental updates, just my opinion :)

Option 5 Buy the case you want for x99 and save the rest

Cheers guys :), that's my plan then, i'll grab a new case fit for the new system and save save save.

Don't jump on the X99 bandwagon until you have seen some performance reviews. My gut feeling is it is going to be an epic failure -

Very low clockspeeds for the 5960X, will this mean poor overclocking headroom (a bit like trying to OC two 4770ks on the same chip).
Low clockspeeds on the DDR4 I have seen so far.

I am going to sit on the fence until after xmas and then decide what platform and GPUs to go for.

I'd go with the option of the new bank account, lob all excess funds into it and set a 1 year countdown from today.

Then in exactly 1 years time you will have a pot of cash to blow on a new rig, 1 year from today i expect the hardware landscape to be a fair bit different :)

You can keep us entertained with monthly status updates on the size of your wad ;) and your anxiety to blow it all, resisting the temptation will be a biiiiitch :)

Cheers guys,

Yeah Kaaps i agree bud, when i said it's a definite, that's depending on reviews etc.

I think what i'm going to do is get myself a new case and monitor for now, still undecided on 4K or or a superwide res.

I'll defintely getting saving Si, but i can't promise i'll be able to resist temptation lol.
