Upgrading mobo and processor

It's a tough call, that one you linked to has double the VRAM, but the one beejjacobs linked to (in build no. 1) has 448 stream processors (compared to 384 in the standard and 2GB version).

Personally, if you are going to spend this kind of money on a graphics card right now I would go with this one.

However, if you are buying a new card at the end of the month then I would just sit tight and wait to see the new 28nm cards AMD and Nvidia will be releasing. On the AMD side at least expect the HD 7850 card to be a good option at this price point.

Is it not true that the OS will be tied to the motherboard if this PC was originally purchased from a store?

That is a good point - since it is a Compaq then it will use an OEM version of windows - so legally that copy of windows can only be used on a system using the original motherboard.

Though I guess with a £700 budget he should be able to afford a new OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (as shown in beejacobs' 2nd spec in post #12) for £80.
