Upgrading PC and not sure on OS

Hi,

I'm about to fork out around £500 for a large upgrade on my current system and I don't know what OS to use. After asking for suggestions the opinion seems to be split between Window's 7 & 8.

I like a tablet style setup, and love my iPad, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it on a PC with a mouse!?!?!?

Are there any other benefits of the more modern 8 over the 7 or is it mainly style and look rather than substance?

My PC is mainly used for surfing, watching movies and playing games.

I only really upgrade my kit once every three or four years, so I don't really want to get something now with a view to upgrading it again in six months or so.

Regards

Lee

Where the XP-7 upgrade was a performance upgrade, the 7-8 upgrade is a visual/user experience upgrade.

8 isn't all that, stick with 7. Or XP SP3....

Windows 7 feels so natural to me, I just cant get on with Windows 8. Tried but cant.
I would advise going to some local computer shops and trying Windows 8 out and see if you like it.

I'll try and get down to PC world in the next few days.

I'm using Vista currently so I guess you'd all tell me that anything would be considered an upgrade from this :)

In terms of memory usage and other measurable factors, does 8 trump 7?

I understand that Vista is very wasteful.

Vista isn't as efficient, but then again it's an old operating system. Windows 7 and 8 being better is to be expected really.

Windows 8 trumps 7 pretty much across the board. It boils down to your subjective opinion of the UI. Some hate it, some love it, most just get on with it.

You really need to try it out for yourself, but even that isn't as straight forward as it sounds. A lot of people on this forum have done a complete U-turn of their opinion, initially disliking it in the first few hours and days to accepting it and even praising it.

Win8 for sure,Win7 was not a big improvemnt over Vista(apart from speed) but Win8 offers new features, speed and more, plus a lot cheaper too,no brainer.

W8 is faster, it's got plenty of decent features that aren't in w7. Metro will be very good for media browsing. Netflix and other apps are so much nicer than the website.

And if he doesn't like metro, can just install a 3rd party app.

Then we have the price, w8 is cheaper.

Not much point going down a shop. Metro will take several days to get used to and as said if you never get used to it, you can disable it through third party software. However you really should learn to like it, it's the future of all Ms products.

W8 oem £79.99
W7 oem £79.99

Doesn't seem much different, until you realise the massive change of license and w8 is infact the equivalent of w7 retail.

If you are going for a major upgrade then it'd be silly not to go for Win 8.

It's just a faster, slicker version of 7 really so ignore anyone who mentions they don't like Metro/don't like having a start button, it just means they haven't used the OS properly yet, takes a few days to get used to but in the end is IS the better OS, no argument.

try Ubuntu is you get on with linux if not Windows 7.

Why on earth would you recommend win7 it makes zero sense. It's more expensive like for like.win8 has performance boost, as well as many new and useful features. on top of that if you really can't get on/like metro. Install one of the many third part software. To bring back start menu.

buying a win7 license is pretty crazy, unless you know of some reason to do so. Like a specific peripheral not working on win8.

why don't you like windows 8?

What have I said that is like that?
I'm pointing out its rather silly to buy w7 when you need a new license. Due to price, performance/features and the fact you can make it look and act like win7 very easily, if you so wish.

To be fair, if you're going to recommend somebody buy an OS that came out in 2009 over the latest version you should at least give a good reason why.

Download the Windows 8 evaluation, try it for up to 90 days - then if you like it, buy it, if you don't, go for 7 instead (do give yourself a fair chance to get used to it though).

It'll be far more productive than trawling wearily through "Windows 8 sucks/Windows 8 rules" ***** fest no. #879652...

Does Windows 8 have an option for normal desktop environment? I'm just thinking that the Metro interface will be great for touchscreens, but mouse/kb users will prefer the old style?
