Even if you think the whole "Let's slap two operating systems into one and force the Metro UI onto everyone" concept is horrific as I do put on Windows 8.

Even without any additions you can mostly ignore Metro. And there are genuine improvements to the desktop.

I'd also go with Windows 8. It's a bit of an adjustment coming from Windows 7 but once you get over the omg where'd my start button go thing you're fine.

Yes it does. Essentially the Start Menu has been replaced by the start screen.

I'll give the evaluation a go, but I think my order is likely to include a Win8 in there

On a seperate note.... what are the apps like? I mean are they as useful as they are on the apple kit?

This, 8 feels quicker.
