Hey all,

With the two new FPS's coming out I am looking to upgrade/ update my rig.

Currently I have.

Intel i3 540 O/C @ 3.4ghz
Asus P7P55D E - EVO motherboard.
4gb RAM
GTX 460
Power supply i think is 550w.

Come to think of it, it was a Titan Xenomorph from you guys many moons ago.

I have a budget of around the £400/£500 mark. I am not interested in super duper ultra settings, but a rig where i can run it on high without fps lag.

Are there any upgrades I could make, or am I better off biting the bullet and getting a new rig? The latter is my gut feeling.

If this is the case what do you people suggest, again with that budget in mind!

Many thanks

Ouch, that system seems a bit outdated buddy!

With a budget of £400/500 you could easily get yourself an excellent gaming rig with perhaps some of the newer i5/i7s and a fairly powerful GPU!

You're telling me. Bought it from here, only installed the operating system on the main hard drive. Installed games on the 2nd hard drive. Music and photos all kept on the NAS.

Runs like a dream still. But it has finally met its match with the new generation of games. Runs BF3, SWTOR, Diablo 3 at perfectly playable and aesthetically pleasing settings.

Few questions, sorry, your the first responder ;)

Haswell chips? Worth it, or stick with Ivy Bridge, they should be a bit cheaper now?
AMD or Intel? Can never decide on this one.
GPU i love the Geforce and thinking GTX650 ti or the 660.
Are most motherboards geared up for SLI compatability, might start with one graphics card then get another later down the line.

Thanks

No most boards are geared for xfire from AMD you generally pay a little more for them to come with the Sli function. Id imagine a 7850 might be an option they are uber cheap.

Thanks, more i research the more question i have ha.

intel i5 chips, much difference between the 3xxx or the 4xxx? I also here a lot about the i5 2500k?

I have played around witha abit.

Came up with this

Intel Core i5-4430 3.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
ASRock H87 Pro4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
GeIL Enhance CORSA 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 2GB Video Card
NZXT Source 210 Elite (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Antec High Current Gamer 400W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Lite-On iHDS118-04 DVD/CD Drive

Al that was £500 i could find. Closer to £400 would be the best ending.

Are you planning on overclocking the cpu balky? If so H87 doesnt support it.

I'm not too confident with overclocking tbh. Always hear horror stories and mixed threads on how easy/ hard it is. Am i better off dropping down a generation of CPU and getting 3550 or 3570?

Overclocking k series is simple so id consider doing it. Most k chips will do 4.3ghz without a voltage bump. So you simply change the multiplier and off you go.

Yep, it's well worth getting a K-chip.. It's much more future proof and will reduce the likelihood of bottlenecking any near-future GPUs that you may want to upgrade to.

What will you be doing with your current rig? Surely you could save some money by taking some components from your current rig and putting them into the new rig.. things like the hdd, dvd-drive, case, power supply, cpu cooling fan (if it is compatible), ram (if compatible).. etc etc

Overclocking is literally changing 2 settings in bios on Ivy Bridge, on Haswell its more difficult due to other factors in the bios affecting stability.

I would grab a 3570k or 3770k, a half decent Z77 motherboard such as the gigabyte z77x-ud3h and then overclock it and be happy and amazed at how easy OCing is.

You literally just need to change cpu multiplier and cpu vcore on ivy bridge.

This entirely.

Or consider 2500k and p67/z68/z77

You could get away with the memory and psu you already own and add more memory and ssd for game loading.

Maybe something like this?

USe your current case/PSU (assuming its a good make, should be if from OcUK)

Gives you a little bit of future proofing too. Its slightly over budget, but you can flog your CPU/Mobo to make up the difference, and the GTX460 will go for around £30-50 too. Which can be extra for buying a new case should you wish.

Thanks again all for you help, some great ideas.

With regards to RAM, i currently have 2x2GB sticks of RAM. Off the top of my head I cant remember what channel, pretty sure its DDR3 though. If I get 2x4GB, would I be able to use all 4 sticks aslong as they are the same channel?
