Hi,

I'm going to take the pludge and buy this for windows and few games i play! http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-009-CR

I have never owed one before. so it's all pretty new to me.
Is there a how to on what i should do first before i install windows etc.
what sata to have it pluged into, and to get the best out of it :)
Is my motherboard ok to run at max speeds ?

The boards a Gigabyte X58 G1 Sniper!

Thanks for your helps guys and girls ;)

Good Morning,

Firstly, good choice on the M4 :) Remove all your other HDDs, set the SATA mode to ACHI, install on the SSD then put your HDDS back in! There are plenty of guides around

As for which port, you don't have native SATAIII ports on X58, and Marvell ones aren't too good I've heard. I'm honestly not sure if people would say use the native SATAII instead - you won't get the top speed but you'll still get the fast boot/loading times which is what is most noticeable. I'll let someone else answer better which SATA port it best to use!

Someone else on the forum posted this, looks pretty useful and will be having a look at this myself when my M4 arrives today (fingers crossed).

That useful, mind a bit of that is already done by Windows as it recognises an SSD - and once you run WEI it will disable defrag and stuff.

Also, be sure to upgrade the firmware to 0309, it's easy:

This is the same board, but mines the sniper.

The SATA 3GB/s ports will work fine, you won't get the full speed but you also won't notice the difference for everyday use/gaming!

Do this before Windows if you can, it's quicker with less data on so before you use it is ideal :)

You're welcome

I just use USB stick then :)

Cheers.

your lucky on that mb,you have the better marvell controllers which match the intel sata3 ports for speed, older marvell controllers have poor speed

Errr, so would i not get full speeds like beejjacobs said?
Or would it be faster having the newer marvell controller, which match the intel sat3 speeds ?
Also, should i update the marvell drivers!..or just let windows update them.
I take it i get them drivers from the gigabyte site if need be :)

Thanks for ya help guys.
