Upsampling DVDs using a PC?

does this do the upscaling on the fly? just wanna put the dvd in and it upscale for me there and then whilst playing?

Cause i have a dell 2405fpw and would love to have it upscaled on the fly without having to rip it.

but you cant upscale the image with WinDVD
, no?

Since the DVD image is 720x480 pixels it will be upscaled to the resolution of your monitor by your graphics card regardless of what player you use. The advantage of ffdshow is that it scales better than your card.

comparing a full screen windvd image and a theatertek/ffd image with the image uspcaled by a multiple of 2 (1440x1152 with Lanczos), the difference is quite pronounced. (to my eyes)

Also Xvid/Divx can be auto upscaled which has an even more pronounced effect to increase the quality, compared with playing them in the Divx player.

I used this version of ffdshow, and it seems to work ok. other versions seemed buggy and didnt work very well.http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

setting it up with mediaplayer classic is easier than it looks. it took me an hour to get my head around it tops, worth the investment if you as me.
