Urban / 'street' photography

Some of that guys shots are more interesting than a lot of the strangers projects I've seen, usually the ones with some context in the shot.

Its personal preference though, I like the type of street shooting where people try and work some composition and candid moments together, rather than portraits where people are expecting the shot.

However, I do like this guy http://jonathanauch.com/ who does both environmental stuff and portraits using either a D700 or an Olympus OM-D :)

I haven't really asked anyone for permission. I might have felt sorry for a busker or a tramp once and dropped him a penny. Howard, why not practice with us at the London meet?

Can't go :(

I love all of the shots posted here, I think I just need to take my camera with me when I go out for lunch, and get snapping

The kind of street photography I am talking about are like shots where, for example.

A little girl got one of those round ballons with a face on it and in that moment, a big fat guy walks by behind it and because of the perspective and timing, it looks like the guy has that as his head....etc

Like Matt Stuart

Not just a street portrait.
Not just a photo of a phone box.
No even human interaction on the street (although these are more interesting than the above)

Take them all together and see something no one else sees.

I agree that they ALL have their merits but the one I find more interesting these days are like the one above.

Visual puns like that are very rare, out of thousands of frames I've shot perhaps only one or two actually qualify as such. However, despite their scarcity I feel that shots like that are often quite shallow, they often don't dig any deeper than at a visual level. All the focus is on the punchline: you spot the pun and move on, rather than wonder why the photographer chose that certain subject. Of course, it all depends on whether you like punchlines or commentaries - I often feel that the ultimate street photograph would have the immediacy of a pun combined with some form of emotional impact - Winogrand and his zoo book is a great example of that, and while it isn't a street photo (more a portrait), Arbus' portrait of the grenade kid is too.

Wow, some real quality here, congrats.
What general shutter speed are people aiming for outdoors in daylight to freeze action? There's no time to mess about with settings when you only a split second to react, so have to have camera already set up with finger on the trigger waiting for that 'hopefully' special moment.

I'd be looking to keep the shutter above 200 to minimise any motion blur, not that a bit of blur is a total no no in a street photo. Personally I'd just plonk it in AV with a pretty wide aperture (2-4) and set the iso to keep the shutter high in the prevaling conditions.

^There seems to be an awful lot of noise in the shadows for ISO100 there An Exception, did you add some grain?

It's on purpose. He likes it. It's kind of trendy actually.

part of me finds that funny/ironic, months of arguing about sensor and ISO performance included and he goes and add noise on purpose :p

I don't really notice or even look at noise any more, if it's there then it's there :p

*goes around using iso5000*

;)

Yeh I added some grain, I'm just experimenting at the moment, but I will probably settle on a similar tweak to my usual processing style.

Yes I can see the irony also :D, although I probably wouldn't process landscapes quite like this :p

After you mentioned it, I finally gave into temptation and purchased VSCO.
I don't really like any of their film presets, however the camera calibration part is useful. It's meant that I can use my usual preset, and not have to do a batch action round trip to PS.

Narh, I totally get the grain effect, hell, I've done it too.

Anyway, my turn I guess....

This street is probably flooded yesterday.

Eventually I will make an NYC thread...

Cookiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie!

See, this is why NYC is so awesome, so much to photograph, I would not know which direction to aim my lens!

Ta. I didn't take as many as I liked, frankly I only took it when I see it whilst walking. I wanted to sneak out at 6am to take some photos but sleep got in the way every morning lol
