URGENT HELP! CPU stuck to HSF

yeah, get this everytime i take my heatsink off mine. but its not a problem, either twist till you can pry it apart or use the hair dryer and twist :)

i normally use a flathead and turn it (between the sink and the cpu sink), make sure you catch it on the rebound, or its pins out for you, lol

seriously just use little pressure.

thanks for the fast reply, got the hair dryer on it now, how long does it take averagely?

also after i have taken it off and wiped off all the old thermal stuff, how much as5 will i need to apply on a amd x2 4400+ cpu?

Thinnest layer you can manage while having good coverage, that method works for me. Twisting the cpu usually works to remove it, never used anything but my hands when that happens.

Push the CPU sideways is my advice. DO NOT use the screwdriver idea i used to do this but sometimes they are really stuck down firmly and you mark/scratch/bend the CPU packaging with the screwdriver.

Working as a Systems Repair Technician i've come accross this a lot.

Plug it all back in, run prime for an hour, shut the pc down and the compound will have softened enough to remove the heat sink on its own.

grab a few of the pins with a pair of pliers and pull it :p

that was a joke BTW, if you do decide to try it i and Ocuk hold no responsability for any damage caused :D

Tried to pull the hsf off the cpu and i ended up with this:

any advice on how to seperate the two?

Thanks.
I have had this happen a number of times, all you need to do is slide the cpu off the side of the heat sink, there's no real need to warm the cpu up but warming it up does help the cpu slide off the heat sink a bit easier, also very be carefull so you don't bend any pins.

Here is a slightly unrelated question -
I know retail conroes come with HSFs, but do they also come with the thermal paste needed to go between the CPU and the HSF?

Yeah they will have a thermal pad on the bottom of the supplied hs/fan so yes.

i have seen this before, someone i know used epoxy adhesive (artic silver i think) and it was just bonded to the HSF ;)

Use the hairdryer on the fan end or side of the heatsink, I wouldn't aim it straight at the cpu. Just heat it a little and ever so often test to see if you can push the cpu off yet, if not keep going a little more.

I've done this once and i admit i totaly filled my pants when it happened heheh.

All i did was gently slide and twist the cpu until it lost its suction to the heat sink.

Be very careful not to get any thermal paste on your fingers then on the CPU pins i would also like to mention :D
