Apply Automotive Carburettor Cleaner to the Join, do it a couple of times it will wick in ...Thinners will work also

Bet You have done wonders to the pin's and socket already !!

thanks for all the advice guys, was moving cpu from one mobo to another, added some as5 on it now, running a lot cooler.

Its not a case of force, its not an un-common problem with P4s, one of my friends has done this exactly before, its the crappy thermal paste that sticks the heatsink together. It doesn't take much to pull it loose from the board even when the clamp is on the cpu.

It's not the amount of force to rip the whole shibang from the motherboard, Its picking up that the Job's needing more force than would sensibly be needed to lift of the cooler...Just a bit of mechanical sympathy
