US election 2012

Say you have a bag containing 600,000 red balls and 400,000 blue balls.

How many random balls would you have to look at before you realise there are more red than blue?

30 Balls. Counts as a significantly large sample size and a normal distribution can be applied.

It's a win-win for me really, if the Dems lose they will be like aw shucks I guess the economy just did it for Obama but at least we carry the Senate, so we'll probably end up with (hopefully) moderate Mitt rather than retard Mitt in the White House.

If the Repubs lose though (which seems likely) RedState and Breitbart are going to be the most epic fun reading, it'll be like 9/11 times 1,048,091

Was more a thought exercise.

I don't think you can actually define an exact number without seeing what the sample actually says. If you have 30 and 15/15 then that tells you nothing about the result, whilst 30/0 might.

So you have to use Bayesian probability calculations. Too late to think about it properly though for me.

Elizabeth Warren is projected to oust Scott Brown from the Massachusetts senate seat, possibly the best news so far, tonight. :D

Looks like Democrats will have the Senate. Todd Akin, who is another Republican with lets say odd views on rape has lost to Claire McCaskill. Him and Richard Mourdock must have some bizarre conversations!

Yup CNN just called that the Republicans cannot win the Senate now. Also commentators (even the republican) is resigned to an Obama win in Florida.

Obama has won. He only has to win Iowa, he can lose Ohio, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina and he will still pass 270.
