US shoots Iran

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A cargo ship contracted by the U.S Military Sealift Command has fired at least one shot toward an Iranian boat, a U.S. defense official said on Friday.

Hardly a prelude to Armageddon, is it?

Toward=threat to keep them at bay more then likely.

Shot=Could probably a blast from a Machine gun or rifle or something which doesnt cause much damage.

More then likely a non event if thats the case

Edit: Damm You Evangelion!

Well probably not armageddon, but firing shots at another countries ships I think is quite a serious affair, given the current climate between the US and Iran.
I'd be interesting to find out why they fired a shot, i'm sure they didn't fire one for fun.

Seems like Iran is up to its old tricks again - probably after some US hostages after their successful raid on British naval personnel. Also seems like the US are a bit more minded to fight back.

Shots get fired all the time at the sea near boats.

Its probably nothing new.

Its only when something gets hit when you have problems

I was referring more to the delicate situation between US and Iran, as far as i'm aware there is a lot of coldplay in the gulf but its not very often that someone fires a shot.

Edit: BBC says they fired warning shots at 2 small vessels, maybe there were attempting to board them?

US Ship Fires On Iranian Vessel

Updated:16:39, Friday April 25, 2008
A ship under US military command has fired "a few bursts" of warning shots towards two boats, believed to be Iranian.

A US defence official confirmed the cargo ship was contracted by the US Military Sealift Command.

The Westward Venture was travelling north in international waters in the central Persian Gulf when the incident happened.

"They were able to avoid a serious incident by following the procedures that we use," said Commander Lydia Robertson, a spokeswoman for the US Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet.

She said the cargo ship was approached by two unidentified small boats, and the crew tried to establish radio contact.

When they got no reply, a flare was fired at the boats, which also got no response.

The cargo ship's security team then fired "a few bursts" of machine gun and rifle warning shots, according to Commander Robertson.

"The small boats left the area a short time later," she said.

A US defence official told the Reuters news agency the boats were believed to be Iranian.

In January, the US said Iranian boats threatened its warships along a route used for crude oil shipments.

Awww c'mon, 'US shoots Iran' sounds a lot better than 'extremely minor US vessel shoots one or two bullets vaguely in the direction of some extremely minor Iran vessel' :p
Firing shots is routine; not very serious at all.

If firing shots is routine, how come this got reported? Slow news day?
