US to put 25% tariffs on dGPUs,motherboards,PSUs and other components made in China

Trumps latest policy is a 60% tariff on Chinese manufacturing and 10% tariff on all other countries

This is estimated to increase the price of computer parts, TVs, phones etc by up to 50%
Everyone will just assume all the brands have matched Asus in pricing :p

Non-issue in any case. Hey, my name is Jensen and I'd like an exemption 'cos stuff. US govn: okay.

I mean, Jensen will just go have lunch with Elon who will in turn whisper into Trumps ear while they snuggle and all will be resolved, not for AMD though they are EVIL.

I can actually see that happening.

So a £550 card now becomes £688, nice.... more price inflation, just what we need, while we are at it maybe Rachel can find another £22 bn black hole to blame on the Tory's and push the tax burden up past 40% because now we are all accelerationists on this house of cards coming down.

i feel prices may be higher because of government downsizing in us as the usd is expected to strengthen significantly even if trump achieves 50% of his targets on govt efficiency, thats going to a much bigger driver for local prices, cant they launch it any sooner?

Many more companies are looking at moving to the US to dodge tariffs

Pegatron, Wistron, Quanta Computer, Wiwynn, Iventec and Foxconn have all concluded their Texas visit to evaluate their options and will announce by May 10 plans to build factories in Texas

Hmm - I guess the strategy works then!

The UK government needs to remove taxes on tech imported from the US and not only will that make Trump happy, it will help us as well. Maybe lower VAT to 10-15% on tech as well to encourage growth there.

It's not like we actually make anything here to worry about foreign competition.

I mean, it works to an extent, I suspect at least some of these, they will ship finished parts to themselves in trays at a considerably lower price, then set up an assembly line, with maybe 20 people on it, to take those parts and stick them in a box. Hey presto massively reduced tariff bill. And sure 20 jobs is better than zero jobs. But its not exactly world changing. And they likely still jack up the price to account for the extra expenses.

What tech do we import from the US?

All the PC components I buy says it was made/shipped from Asia.

The chips themselves are made in the US. They only go to Asia to get stuck on PCBs. But we do have companies in the UK who buy Nvidia and Intel chips to make bespoke hardware for commercial and military use, including GPUs (super expensive!).

If the tariffs went maybe we'd see some commercial GPUs etc being made in the UK as well.

Which chips are you talking about?

Nvidia (and AMD) use TSMC, based in Taiwan.

If chips are going to be made in the US, it will cost us more here, because America cannot produce goods as cheaply as the Chinese can
