Hi guys/gals

I have an issue with a USB hard drive which i want to format but the computer is not picking it up. when i plug it in i get the USB DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNISED....click here etc etc for solution or something.

anyway i click and it just brings up the USB root hubs. Ive checked the device manager and its not listing it as a hard disk either...but under the USB controller as unkown device, ive tried deleting it to see if it wud repair itself on reboot. OR if i leave it for a few moments i get a pop up saying the device is now installed and ready for use...or something along those lines. however it is not ready for use as its nowhere to be seen.

the reason for wanting to format it was becuase it had been giving me a 'scan & fix recommended' prompt when i plug it in the computer...so ignoring that prompt many times i decided to format it completely...now the issue begins.

I start the complete format with default allocation clusters then about 5-10 secs from starting the format i nudged the hard disk enclosure (it was in the way) and it powers OFF! im pretty sure this messed it up. if it has how can i rectify it!

Thanks greatly in advance :)

oh forgot to mention im running vista home premium 64bit and its a samsung case (assuming samsung drive inside!) with two USB ends to plug in (ive gothem both plugged in to help power it up if necessary). ive tried the other USB ports also.

Seems like a serious problem, as I usually get that exact same dialog when I plug in a knackered USB flash drive...

So It may be that, or a software issue (Windows?)
Anyways, If you come to a conclusion that the electronics inside is knackered, not much can be done.. however, the HDD itself should be alright (assuming it can be taken out?)

might seem like a strange solution but try it in a mac.

My flash messed up and wouldn't load on xp/vista/7 but worked fine on my macbook. I copied everything over and reformatted the drive, placed everything back one and fixed
