USB drive won't boot

Just going to crosspost this from General Hardware as it wasn't getting much love over there.

Trying to flash my M4 with the 0309 firmware using a 16GB Verbatim Store 'n' Go USB drive that I bought from OcUK. The drive works fine normally but this is the first time I have tried to make it bootable but the PC just hangs when it tries to load from the USB drive.

Is this an issue with the size of the drive or is it something else? I have also tried booting into a live fedora environment from it and get the same issue on any PC which leads me to believe that the issue is with the drive.

Help please!

Don't think it's a size issue, my 16GB Kingston works fine with DOS/Linux booting...

ive had this a few times, are you using windows 95 on the usb stick to boot the update file or does it do it itself?

Using syslinux using the Universal Linux Installer from this guide:
http://www.storagereview.com/how_upgrade_crucial_ssd_firmware

I have used the Linux installer before with no issues (on a different drive).
