This one has confused me

GF has left a note saying she unplugged the 2 things we have plugged into the fron 2 USB slots on our PC to plug the external HDD in to transfer some files. This is what we always do and never had a problem.

The thing is, the mouse, which is plugged into a rear USB port has stopped working:confused: wont work in any USB slot, but works on the laptop so the mouse is fine...tried the laptop mouse in the PC and nothing.

When i plug the mouse into the PC, windows makes the sound ti does when something is plugged in, but nothing appears in the mouse settings, its as if no mouse is there at all...have updated drivers and still nothing

Has left me stumped this one, any ideas?

Ok i have removed it from device manager and added new hardware and it just says it fails, though it recognises what type of mouse i have :/

Also tried a system restore, but that hasnt worked either :(

Have you tried another mouse?

It seems like a driver problem though. Ask your GF what she did when it stopped working.
Step by step.

Yes, i said in my OP that i had tried another mouse and that didnt work either

And all she did was unplug 2 USB from thee front of the machine, plugged another in and then replaced them, the mouse is plugged in round the back, this gets done quite often to transfer things to our external TV harddrive

Windows XP by any chance?
The generic mouse driver might have become corrupt in WDC folder.

Yeah windows XP, tried installing drivers from the disc i received with the mouse and that still wouldnt work

Ill see if i can navigate through the logitech website and find a driver that way :(

This might sound trivial and too simple - but you may want to try a disk cleanup either with the built in Windows tool or with Ccleaner. Ccleaner is a little more verbose.

The reason is this will clear out the driver cache, freeing up room for more temp. driver installations and in theory get rid of any corrupt/unused ones.

Worth a shot mate, i dont seem to be able to navigate any website without a mouse at all so the windows built in one is running at the minute :)

Nope that hasnt worked either :(

Have tried installing drivers straight from the CD but still having the same problem.

Any more ideas? :(

You want to reinstall all controllers one by one I think, here is an excerpt from the M$ site.

"Remove and reinstall all USB controllers

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved."

also if you haven't got it running yet, do alt+shift+numlock to get numkeys turned on.

Nope...first USB bus i uninstalled was my keyboard as well >< using a ps2 kayboard and mouse now so i can atleast use the PC...this is annoying me a tad now...

In device manager under mouse, its says no driver is installed at all, though i have just downloaded the mx518 driver package from logitech and ran that, yet it still shows no driver installed, but wont let me install one ><

...the same thing has now happened with my keyboard

It recognises it is plugged in, the lights even light up, but it says there is no driver, even after directly installing the driver from the manufacturer's website

My external music HDD is plugged into USB and working fine...it just wont allow me to update my mouse/keyboard drivers anymore

Keyboard works fine in BIOS though, and is sat lit up in front of me :/
