I have XP and in the past i've been connecting USB devices at USB2 speeds, no problem.

I think i did a clean install a few months back and noticed then (but didnt do anything about) the fact that i get a warning each time i connect a USB2 gadget telling me that the device would perform better/faster on a USB2 connection.

Any ideas what i've missed?

2 things

-check your bios to make sure usb2 is enabled

-check device manager for usb host controllers. the magic word you are looking for here is "enhanced". if you have this showing then you should be running usb2......

if it's not showing as enhanced but you have usb2 enabled in the bios, i'm stumped..... :D

Also, make sure you have installed the USB2 drivers... some motherboards need them :)

I always get USB 2.0 drivers with my motherboards but have never had to install them as SP2 has always had them

Maybe SP2 missed out on your motherboard?

Nice one. Went through that route and one of the USB devices had a yellow exclamation mark on it..went to properties, updated driver and all is now well. USB2 is back.

Thanks all. :)

Shouldn't all the USB Controllers show as enhanced not just one????
I wondered that as well as on my PC I only have the one 'enhanced' entry

When I backup my PC, I have to be sure to connect my external hard drive into the proper USB 2.0 port or otherwise I am backing up at USB 1.1 speeds

I think that the USB design only allows for one root host, which all the other are attached through in a tree. So only the root would need to be enhanced.

I see.

When I plug my external hard drive or memory stick into a different USB port to the one that I know is USB 2 compatible I get this:

I guess my drivers must need updating then

never knew that, cheers -good way to quickly test if someone has usb2!

as said above, check the bios settings

what motherboard do you have?

-also, be advised that some usb brackets (the motherboard usb addon things) are only usb 1.1, so won't give you usb2 speeds even if the motherboard has usb 2, and some usb cables can't only do usb 1.1 also :)
