Given the processing power of the ps3 is there any way of using it to convert videos?

I've tried googling to see if anything comes up but all i get is links for programs to convert for ps3 use

I expect the answer to be a resounding no, but you never know unless you ask!

In normal use A RESOUNDING NO :).

In theory you could install Linux on it and use any Linux based vide encoders.

You problems would be 2-fold:

1) The software used for Linux to install on ps3 does not allow it full access to the cpus/gpu of the ps3 so cannot run at full potential (hence limiting speed)
2) You are unlikely to find an encoder specifically coded for the cell cpu and it's optimisations so it would be EVEN MORE SLOW to convert a file.

It is a missed opportunity though, it would be a nice option to have in the menu, that you can convert any videofile you copy to the harddrive of the PS3 to a format the PS3 can display from the menu.

Problem is, in order to convert a video file, the processor must first be able to recognize the data - it's impossible to convert videos on the PC without having the codec needed to play the original video file. If you wanted the PS3 to convert a video, it would need to be able to play it first.

I was goint to make that point. If you can convert it then you can play it in its original format so there's no point converting it.

I see, that is propably why the PS3 (and Xbox360) can't convert.

Fair enough, I really didnt expect it to be possible. But what with all the emphasis on the raw power of the cell I thought it might be nice:)

to clarify it wouldnt have been converting for playing on the ps3.

The reason why I thought about it was that I was converting a 1080p film into another codec for someone and it was taking years!

Thanks for responses though
