Using an X Box 360 online through a laptop's connection to a router, possible?

Yup :). I did it by bridging the two internet connections on the laptop and it seems to work fine (I had to change some IP settings though). I tried it on another laptop though and it didn't work so I really don't know what happened.

any chance you could elaborate in detail as im a n00b at this kind of madness. It would be much appreciated, thanks so far guys.

Info on required cables etc and changing of IP settings etc.

Google search for it, there are several methods. But I cannot gurantee it will work, my computer didnt want to share my wireless connection, and wouldnt let me bridge. Hopefully you will have better luck, but it seems to be either it works right away or it doesn't.

You need to have a cat 5 cable connected into the back of your laptop, and then you need to go into your network connections window (found throught he control panel) and highlight both the wireless connection and the wired connection. Select bridge connections and this will create a new network adapter called Network Bridge. Assign the network bridge a new IP (one that you don't use) and then you're ready to rumble on XBLive! through your laptop :)

Oh if only it was that easy :p, networks and live have caused me no end of problems...

But yes that's basically how you do it, any problems let us know :)

I was using the laptop for ages as it had wireless on it and used the cross over cable, i believe u get one with the 360 any way dont u?

Im having some issues getting mine to work on the pc at mo with media center :/

I've tried many times to share a wireless connection to a router to no avail, ive heard it sometimes works sometimes doesnt. IMO suck it up and buy a wireless adapter for the xbox, i know its an utter rip off but they seem to work pretty well and will make moving the box around a peice of pee

I would have done if I was certain I'd get a good quality connection (the AP is 3 floors above the 360!), turns out it's not too bad so I might invest in one in the future :)

I have connected the cat 5 / ethernet whatever cable that fits in my PC's back and the 360.

Now what? Do I have to create a new connection for this?

My old LAN/ethernet connection has a red cross next to it, does that mean the actual adapter is turned off or what?

Heeeeeeeeeeeeelp please.

Tell u what m8, wait till tomorrow night, ill be home then and will try the w/less out on my home network where the router is 4 floors of an old building below and i have very low signal on my PC's netgear but it maintains a stable connection both in internet tasks and CS source etc.

In short if its ok at mine then it'll be no problem dude, ill let u know.

Right I just got it working and everything was lovely and I came 2nd in my first PGR3 online race BUT....

My friend next door using the same wireless router setup his laptop the same as me (i just had to connect the cable and everything was fine) but he can't join games....

...he can get on live, but when he tries any game it just almost joins a lobby and players can be seen for a split second, but then he gets dropped back to the menu?

Any ideas?

The adapter will have a red cross through it because the Xbox 360 probably isn't switched on at the moment. The red cross appears when there is no active link for the network cable to use, so turn on your Xbox and this red cross *should* disappear. If it doesn't, then you have a faulty cable or your Xbox's network card is fubar.

You won't need to create a new connection for this, it is already there with the cross through it, just not active. Then once that becomes active, highlight the wireless and the wired connection, right click on one of them (any of them) and select "Bridge connections". This will create a new, seperate "adapter" called a Network Bridge that you will then need to assign an IP (a unique IP, not the same as either used on both your wireless and wired adapter). Then you can use the Xbox to communicate with your PC, and test live. One thing to note, is that there have been some issues experienced by wireless-to-wired bridge users (using certain types of wireless adapter. I use a US Robotics and I have the problem). Take a look here for help with resolving non-connectivity issues when the bridge has been set up. I can't browse the internet on my PC until I've entered the "netsh bridge set a 1 e" command. The 1 in that command is the number your adapter is attached to. Use netsh bridge show to find out which number is assigned to your wireless adapter. This only has to be done when the bridge is created, and it will remain at that setting forever unless you disable the connection for whatever reason. If you do disable and recreate the bridge, you will need to run the command again. If you have any further issues with this, let me know. I'll do what I can to help :)

Out of interest, what problems did you have |Thomas|?

A couple of "limited or no connectivity" warnings. From what I remember I had to tell the bridge to assign an IP automatically and it seemed to resolve it . The xbox all came up with an IP error thing too in the testing which I fixed by assigning it a specific IP.

The main thing though (which I still haven't fixed) was the fact that when "use windows to configure my wireless network settings" is ticked in the wireless options it just won't work, I keep getting the red cross. So everytime I want to use the wireless network I need to tick the box to let it connect to our network, and then untick it and it connects . If you know how to fix it mate let me know :)

Well what can I say, cheers! Very much appreciated sir :) Does the 360 wireless adapter have a good ariel then?

How can I change the bridge connection from 24mbps to 54mbps, as it is on 24 and I think that has something to do with my friends connection not working properly when joining games?

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease help, we've tried many things and nothing is working.

Whilst i can offer no real advice i would not suggest that this is at all your problem, remember that 24mb/s is far and away fast enough being as your internet is probably far lower speed than this. The suggestion i put forward is that your router is sending its IP to live and thereby locking out your friend, try turning yours off and only using his. Can you use two 360's on live at the same time? (thru 1 router i mean)

It should be possible to use two Xbox's through Live! at the same time, much the same as you can play on two PC's from the same IP address in most online games. The problem is probably the wireless connection being throttled on the 24Mbps line. The speed shouldn't make a difference, but if there are other applications using the internet at the same time (that you don't know of) then when you try and send a large amount of data through to the Xbox and vice-versa, you'll most likely experience a disconnect because the bandwidth has all been used and that's why the connection may be timing out.

I'm not exactly clear on how your friends Xbox makes its connection to the wireless router. Is it through another PC or is it through an Xbox Wireless adapter? Try altering the position of the aerials on each of the wireless devices. I find pointing the tips in the direction of the wireless signal to be a good way of getting a clean link. Hopefully this should get you more juice out of the connection.

|Thomas|, what kind of connection issues where you experiencing? When you manually configured the connections, did you put in the IP, Default Gateway, and Primary DNS? Your Default Gateway and Primary DNS should always be the IP address of your Router (if that is connected directly to the broadband connection). I've got these settings configured on each of my adapters in my PC first, and then I create a bridge and give the bridge new details. So for eg my setup is like this:

Wireless adapter IP: 192.168.0.7
Wired adapter IP: 192.168.0.8
Network bridge IP: 192.168.0.1

All of those IP's are allowed through the firewall in both the router and my software firewall using a security rule. When the network bridge has been created, I have to run the "netsh bridge set a 1 e" command before I am able to browse the Internet on my PC, as this has the wireless card inside it, which is in turn connected to the router, which is connected to the internet. That command forces certain wireless adapters to behave in a certain way, allowing you to browse the internet if you have connection troubles beforehand.

I honestly can't see that having a static or a dynamic IP address would make any difference, unless you didn't input the Default Gateway and Primary DNS IP's when you set the connection details.

Let me know how you get on.

One other thing to add. What adapter are you using |Thomas|? I have a USR wireless adapter and it will not work at all if I let Windows try and configure the connection. I have to use the software that comes with the wireless network driver. So I just disable the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service in the service control applet (Click Start -> Run and type in "services.msc". Then press enter and it's near the bottom) and this stops Windows from trying to interfere and just allowing the USR software to handle the connection and configuration. Works like a charm without any hassle whatsoever now that it's all set up right.
