I am trying this for the first time, that is to connect my phone via USB to touchscreen. Initially had some problems trying to link with USB, Mirrorlink or Bluetooth, but got there in the end with USB. I am currently using the android auto app for navigation, but having a mixed experience. An answer to one question would help a lot, and that is do I need a wifi connection during driving/navigation after set up? Thanks.

You need a data connection yes. As you're already using your phone, you've got that covered so I can't see there being an issue?

OK, cheers, it was just that after I planned the route at home connected to home wifi, when connected via USB phone to screen, I was navigated from A to B without a connection during the journey (mobile data off), but I couldn't get it work on the return journey until I switched mobile data on. Haven't got a unlimited data usage plan at the moment, and wasn't sure how much data navigation takes.

It uses only a small amount of data. When I used it almost daily it consumed a few hundred mb.

You can download maps offline over wifi at home with Google Maps as well so this can save a lot of data when out on mobile data

As others have said, you can typically cache the routes offline so you don't need a data connection, however you'll lose any sort of traffic updates - of which Waze/Google Maps is very good at these days, and if you have to divert, i suspect you'll be off course.

Mapping data doesn't require too much data, and if you're worried about consuming too much, there's a number of apps that will limit the data that can be used.
