Using the word 'gay' as a slur

So if someone called me a stupid ****** n-word and I got offended, it would make me racist?

Great logic.

yea, itd make you racist and mental, who wouldnt want to be called black, hell id love for some bird to call me a n word when we were naked gettin jiggy

I agree with the OP to a degree. "Gay" is used in a derogatory sense so should probably be put in the same class as **** and ******.

Is used often on this forum.

If I were gay, I would find this offensive.

I think the word should be considered an expletive and not allowed on a family forum.

Thoughts?

(apart from calling the thread/idea gay?) :)
My thoughts are people like you need to get a life...

What do you do? Sit around all day thinking of things to moan about and just generally try to make issues where there are none?

PC crew... worse than knife weilding, chavy thugs...

The day I can't say "OH THAT'S GAY!" without it being frowned upon is a day I don't want to endure.

It is used in a derogatory fashion though. It is often said in a manner that undermines a large proportion of the world. Sexuality being abused rather much the same way that offensive remarks are made on peoples skin tone.

I think you should stop enduring already if the use of a homophobic phrase (which it is, by definition regardless of whether your overuse of the phrase has rendered it's offensive value as nil) is what keeps you going. I used to use it all the time as a kid, in the playground, but I stopped.

I'm not a thousand other racial/sexual put-downs but does that make it right for me to use them

but no gay person has come foward and said they feel extremely offended by gay being used as another word for rubbish.

so you cant speak for them because you arnt gay.

Why?

I've got a few gay friends and they don't care about it in the slightest and use the word themselves as a general word to mean rubbish. All depends on the context it's used in.

As had been said, if it's not offending you then don't try and ban the word. That's just how the whole daft PC ideas start out. People assuming something will cause a problem, and then banning it, when the people who are meant to be offended don't actually care just ends up causing more friction. Similar thing happened not long ago with the police putting up a poster with a photo of a dog on it, and then took it down and apologized incase it offended a muslim or something  From there it's easy to turn into a statement such as "muslims want posters of dogs banned" and just stirring things up for no reason.

My friend's friend is a gayer. I accidently kept saying it in conversation, but he didn't mind at all.

He used it himself in the same way I did too.

People like you commonly confuse manners and politeness with political correctness. How about you put yourself in the shoes of a minority before you start a tirade.

Isn't it interesting how those so against PC are themselves often brash and agressive - it seems less a well thought out position and more an excuse for their own potty mouth.

This forum is admirable and rare on the internet for being largely devoid of mud slinging and expletives. Without some control, the forum would be a great deal less enjoyable. The internet, as in everyday life, works better with well thought out rules and laws - politeness feeds into the same paradigm. And it is my personal conviction that we should be careful not to offend others.

Its called being responsible and grown up!

Not entirely the point though is it? By your logic any form of discriminatory comment is fine aslong as the target of said comment doesn't complain.

I think you're too smart for you own good:eek:

do you know me? Everyone says that about me, im really clever you see.
I bet you're my stalker, GAY stalker.....

;)

I hope gay doesnt get adopted by the PC crowd in all fairness, its what I grew up saying and itll be hard taking that word away from my generation.
I still find racial slurs hilarious tbh, but only because only a complete idiot could use them seriously.

I used to think this too, and I do not blame you for thinking it. But gays are still in a precariously delicate position in society, not yet would many on a day to day basis have the audacity to stand up against something that is certainly not outright offensive - like the n-word, for example - but is sufficient to cause them discomfort.

In fact, the very apparent tameness of the slur 'gay' probably represents why few gay people don't complain about its use - they might feel petty - but that does not mean they do not find it offensive.

Until very recently, I would have agreed with you but then I met a homosexual who is about 52 years old and I asked him about the word and he objected to its use, as did some of his friends. Perhaps the younger generation have simply gotten used to its ubiquitousness.
