I've got a HP proliant windows 2011 server running on my desktop. I never actually get to utilise the server much at all.

I've started doing some web based consulting and need to have a landline phone number to give a good impression of my business, skype gives you a landline number for £15 for 3 months or something. Can't beat that.

I want to hook it up to my always on server (requires USB connection). Was wondering will the skype/voup phone work if the host machine does not have a soundcard, or does the handset handle it's own sounds?

If it doesnt work I guess I could stretch to getting a half height soundcard (as long as it doesn't get more than 30 degrees celcius hot, as I want to keep the rig quiet.

Also any recommendations for skype/voip handsets? I have a SIP voip account that I want to use as well.

The chances are the USB device is actually as USB soundcard built into the handset so will probably do everything you need without an additional soundcard.

what mobile do you have, if android or iPhone you could use 3cx phone for the sip account.

The sound quality you can get from sip is much better than skype. A uk landline number for voip can also be purchased for as little as £2 per month link1 link2. I recommend getting a voip adapter such as linksys PAP2t and and connecting it to a normal analog phone instrument.

Sipgate gives you free landline numbers and their package is pretty reasonable as well. Ended up purchasing a BT home hub + cordless handset off the auction site for £8 to use with it.

I use sipgate too, free UK number, I use it for inbound calls more than outbound, works brilliantly with a PAP2 device so I can use my existing DECT wireless phones around the house :)
