using wifi for gaming

Pings werent a big issue for me either. Dropouts due to my usb adapter were the major problem, and i was only a few metres from the router, (netgear dg834pn) so signal was good. Couldnt use a pci wireless card due to having sli gpu's which block the pci slots.

This tbh.

If the option to go with a wired solution is there, I'd always go for it.

Wifi is pretty much as good as wired using a decent router and wifi card, when living at my parents I could get full 50Mb/s over wireless and pings of between 15-20ms when gaming, never had a single drop out or any lag

home plugs are so easy to set up,just plug them into a plug socket near your router connect Ethernet cable....plug other homeplug up stairs/or where ever and do the same as down stairs and hey presto it all works.

couldn't be more happier with my value homeplugs.

no software to install, just a simple plug and play and your gaming again :)

ok my neighbour had a 10" drill bit, so i went for it and glad to say cable in and loots quite neat after tacking and hiding up the skirtboard. also i'm alive which is quite a surprise with my random drilling :D

Glad to see that your sorted, in my case i shelled out 40 quid for the homeplugs. Only to discover they wouldnt work in my house, got the ethernet cable for free, a mate at work made me one up during the lunch break.

For anyone that talks about wifi and gaming. 54g connection, internal PCI-E card. Router downstairs PC upstairs.

And that's with City of Heroes, Spotify, MSN messenger and IE open. 4 bars on the wifi signal as well.

i reckon if I ran it with nothing open it would be even better.

Also the distance is incorrect as I'm up in Scotland!

now out of City of heroes, MSN closed. Spotify still running though.

Yup, WiFi is fine for gaming:

Using an Airport Extreme and a cheapo Netgear USB adapter, I'm on the other side of the house from it too.

Using an Edimax usb wifi dongle with the new Virgin Homehub in the room next door separated by a partition wall ;/

Wireless is useless isn't it?

Edit, that's with me being upstairs on the other side of the house and with my MacBook Pro / iPhone both on and doing stuff.

Pretty sure my sisters PC is on too as she's playing a game on Steam ;)

Pretty much all of our house is wireless, the only PC that isn't is the one connected to the hub downstairs.

So that's 1 MacBook Pro, 2 Desktop PC's and a NetBook, a ps3, 2 xbox 360's and my iPhone that could all potentially be using this wireless magic, and it's apparently "useless for gaming" :o

I've been gaming on wifi for atleast 6 years, I've never had a problem and I'm running a b/g/n router with a b/g wireless reciever.

24ms on speedtest, regularly get between 20-40ms in 80% of the games I play and consequently never really had a problem.

I use one of Linksys USB network adapter, gets luke warm, never gets hot.

I am only about 4-5 meters away from the router though and 1 floor above so not that far really, I get 96% signal strength at the moment.

Wired connection. Low ping, Zero jitter. :p

These tests are irrelevant thought. The whole thread is about the benefits of between the router and your machine, not to some external server.

Still with my quote from earlier... "If the option to go with a wired solution is there, I'd always go for it.". If you're forced onto wireless through the other options being inconvenient for your uses. It's more than capable.

All these speedtests show nothing though - I have no issues with pings and throughput, but my wireless connection drops intermittently, whispeediestest wont show.

Wireless has never been a problem for me in my PC, ps3 or iPad. It's a bugger on xbox though, I get dropped loads.

Home plugs look great but they rely on the router and computer being on the same circuit which they're often not (as per the case in my house) and not all of us have the option of drilling holes everywhere.

That's a problem you're having, whether it be the distance from the router or the type of equipment, where you're located.

The fact remains there are a lot of people who use wireless for gaming and have had zero issues, having wires trundling up a set of stairs or through walls is highly impractical unless you're rewiring or are definitely set on a wired connection.

I'd agree with order, if you have the option of wired with no inconvenience then go for it, yet Wireless is still a decent option.

I use wireless on Virgin 50mbit. Drops occasionally (due to the crap SuperHub) but I get a solid 53mbit down and 5mbit up. Usually ping about 15

I use a wifi connection for online gaming (COD, WoW, CSS etc) and unless the server is not located in Europe, I'm always rocking one of the lowest pings ingame, never had any problems with bad connections and im sitting 3 rooms away from the router, don't feel like im at a disadvantage to wired users. I only ever experience drops in connection when I overload what my USB adapter can handle (youtube, online game open, torrent all at the same time)
