The cd key was probably registered. I would never buy a second hand PC game, especially not a multiplayer one where you are more than likely required to create an account and use a serial key.
CD key is required during first start up. After that you go straight to the login screen. However if you already have the cd-key registry and save game files in your document you might not need to re-enter the key even if it's first start.
People have sold their copies of UT3 in MM so don't see why it won't work. One of the sellers tried using the key to create new account and that worked. Sold my copy to a mate and that worked as well.
Thanks for all the replies, i've managed to create an account in the end.
It didn't like my email for some reason, then it didn't like about 10 different user names! But i got there in the end.
I'm guessing i've maybe previously made a gamespy account through a different game and forgotten about it? Not sure, but i think i just panicked with it being 2nd hand and not being able to log in and not try other alternatives.
