If this is something that has happened in the middle of a major town, you may have a point. However, it was placed in an extremely remote part of the Utah desert, only easily accessible by helicopter, put together not by one man but likely by a team. Not only that, it has been there undiscovered for over four years and no-one knows who put it there or why. It is a highly unusual event. Your reason for its existence, ostensibly, for attention-seeking, is merely an assumption and based on nothing whatsoever other than personal opinion.

Bear in mind the clear, obvious links to 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is considered by many to be the finest film of all time, and it's clear to see why there is a cultural link to extraterrestrials which would interest and intrigue many people the world over.

And thus be perfect for attention-seeking.

If it was put in the middle of a major town it would be a 5 minute thing at best unless it was extremely well marketed and probably only if it was tied to a powerful political force of some sort. The only artist who's got huge attention from that sort of thing is Banksy and a monolith won't work the same way as Banksy's graffiti. Erecting a monolith in the middle of a major town would also run the risk of legal problems depending on what needed to be damaged to erect it, how it was attached to the ground, etc. The person or people doing it would probably also be on CCTV. Not very mysterious. Probably a story in the local paper.

But something in the middle of nowhere erected by someone for some reason and left there until it was eventually found, well, that's news all over the place. As we've seen.

And it was inevitable that it would be seen because it's visible from the air. It's visible from anywhere with an internet connection because it's visible on Google maps. If need be, an anonymous message online anywhere could have started the attention rolling.

Yeah I did have a google of him, he'll be the guy the for sure.

Patrick Mackie, the photo uploader, has admitted that when he bought the camera, he didn't update the date/time, so the Exif data is just wrong. The Exif says the photo was taken in May 2016, but the camera used to take the shot only came onto the market in Sept 2016, so it definitely wasn't him.

Also there is another Patrick Mackie, the one from the earlier cited blog, who is a different person. He just photographs sculptures [some of which happen to be monoliths], he doesn't make them.

So the person responsible is still unknown.

Probably just a copycat, and conceptually linked more than anything. There will probably be more of them sprouting up now, and they'll get less coverage.

The original person did a great job of creating a mystery. Monolith stays in desert for four years, finally discovered then disappears days later - no known culprit or reason. Nicely done.

Yup, and very amusing to me :)
