Hi,

Im planning on moving into my own flat after the summer after 3 years in student accomodation. I was wondering if someone could give me a rough estimate of how much my utility bills (electricity, water and heat) will be for a 1 bedroom fairly small flat.

I'll probably wash my clothes every week take a shower every other day (im usually away during the summer time) i like to keep my pc on 24/7 however i turn off all the lights im not using etc. heating i dont tend to keep it on 24/7 right now im in a fairly small room with a small electrical heater which wasnt on too much because a-) the pc warms this room up quite a bit and b-) i dont like my room to be boiling hot constantly...i.e. all the usual stuff.

You can leave the PC on 24/7, it will take a very small amount of electricity.

Kettles, cookers, microwaves, irons, tumble dryers, any appliances that 'heat' will use loads of electricity. Washing machines - if run at 30C - will also use a very small amount.

Well over all for our bills in the place I am at the moment (bar Council Tax) we pay about £100 a quarter each for our bills.

Roughly we pay £20pm for water (which is divided by 5, it's billed monthly), and our last electricity and gas bill was about £335 (again, divided by 5, it's billed quarterly).

We pay £30 / month / person for Gas, Water and Electric, and £40 a month each (there's 3 of us) for council tax.

£30 a month sounds fine for gas/water/electricity my 3 month phone bill is around £60 and internet another £20 per month..

so roughly im looking at around £70 in utility fees per month...which isnt too bad i suppose..

Don't forget your internet. Basic phoneline will be ~£10 p/m, plus the monthly cost of your BB package (£20-ish).

yep i included all those in the £70

£30 (heat electricy gas) + ~ £20 bt + £20 ukonline = £70

ive already got a bt phone line + own internet so i didnt ask how much those were gonna cost me as i already knew..

I'd much rather foot it for a student then a bloody benefits scrounger.

Why thank you. :D

In fairness, I've been paying taxes since I started working at 16, and only since Spet '06 have I stopped (becoming a full time uni student), so I'm not a complete tax dodger. :)

I'd say budget for around £100pm on all bills, that way if for one reason or another something costs extra you won't be worrying about trying to find the money. :)

Scrounger yes, but I'd rather foot it for someone genuinley down on their luck than someone who will easily afford to pay it back in the future but won't.
Won't they? I graduated, and am now paying more tax then I want too, for seemingly very little return.
