Won't they? I graduated, and am now paying more tax then I want too, for seemingly very little return.

You're not taking into account...

-The many (and I mean MANY) foreign students who will return 'home' after uni.
-The small but significant percentage of British students who live/work abroad after uni.
-The small but significant percentage of British students who do not end up in high-paid jobs. <-- Actually this may not be so small. :/

None of these thousands of people pay back their 3-4 years worth of council tax, thus making it more expensive for the rest of us.

Egosh, if you're a lousy foreigner, or won't get a decent job, or move abroad later, damn you to hell!

Obviously my comment was aimed at the situation in general rather than the OP himself, but nonetheless he could easily fall into any of those categories for all I know.
