Vacuum cleaner recommendations?

Whatever is on offer on AO at the time of needing a hoover.

Anything over £50 is a rip off and you are buying into a marketing dream of owning a glamorous hoover.

Live the dream.

(but then i make little mess)

I would always, always go with Sebo - had them for years and always been really happy with their performance. I don't care much for the aesthetics of Dysons so the somewhat utilitarian looks of the Sebo range suit my just fine.

I too bought into this idea it's all name, and to some extent it is, computer parts set me right, pay the extra, get the extra service. Same went for washing machines, vacuums and fridges, I paid some more, when the washing machine died, I moaned and had it fixed, or a new one.. Maybe vacuum cleaners aren't at the top of your list, but with 2 kids and a busy family, the vacuum is every bit as important as the washing machine.. I basically pay more for stuff that we use everyday, day in day out, it makes sense to buy better, for better performance, and more importantly, better service. Took about 5 years for my wife to get this, but it's still a work in progress, still working on the Ferrari argument!

We have 2 large dogs in our home and the smell during and after vacuuming is rank, like a zoo. It passes in about 10 minutes with the windows open but still unpleasant. I even went as far as completely stripping the Dyson to component level and cleaning everything, replacing filters and rebuilding it but it's the air that passes through the vacuum cleaner. No filter Hepa blah blah is going to stop that stink.

The other half must have got fed up with me moaning about this so bought the G-tech Air Ram K9 and it's a revelation. It has a refillable floral scented tab cartridge that at least masks the smell and works really well, I'd never have another vacuum cleaner without this feature! The vacuum cleaner is cordless and light too, so you can whizz through the house in no time. No cables to mess with.

However, there are a few drawbacks to this vacuum cleaner. You need to constantly recharge it, getting allegedly 40 minutes per 4 hour charge and I have concerns about the longevity of the Li-ion battery (a new one costs £70 !). You have to take the battery out to charge it. It doesn't clean well long the edge of the skirting boards and the dirt container isn't very large (enough for a few circuits of the house). There are no attachments to this vacuum cleaner so you'll need the accompanying hand held Multi K9 too for areas like stairs, but this has the scented cartridge too. You are looking at around £350 for both including the car kit for the Multi K9.

Couple of 10 year old dyson dc14's in our house, reasonably heavy use for 10 years and they are fantastic, very strong suction and very clean to empty.

yeah I liked the idea of the air ram, I also liked the dyson lion, but neither offered enough time per charge.. yes 40 mins for the first month, but like phones, they bleed usage time over time lol.. I just wonder, if you use the vacuum everyday, how long til it dies after 10 mins?

I thought like this, having had a succession of cheap/free vacs down the years even a nice Panasonic but then I splashed out on the miele C3 cat and dog and it is light years ahead of anything else I've used carpets that we thought were pretty clean were visibly better after the cat and dog went over them and the amout of hair it removed even from a pet free household was mind blowing. It is also great to have a fully controllable power so I could easily clean the blinds and curtains all of which looked visibly better afterwards! I won't ever go back to a cheap vac!

We have a Dyson DC39 and i'm not a big fan of it for the following reasons:
  1. It's ridiculously easy to tip it over
  2. The diameter of the hose is small and easy to block
  3. The plug is very easy to dislodge in any wall socket, that pretty much as soon as you reach the range of the cord, any slight pull will pull the plug out slightly and turn the power off
  4. The attachment storage on the back of the main unit is difficult to use
  5. Handle makes my hand sore after a while
It has been reliable though especially as I mistreat it a bit when 1.) and 3.) happen.

I wish vacuum cleaners would have the power button on the handle :(

Not on hardwood flooring but my nan has one which she raves about. I've used it a few times and it works very well indeed. I will be getting one soonish as my current hoover was given to me and it's quite bulky. I've been reading a lot about them and they work very well by all accounts.

One thing which puts me off the air ram are the hundreds of broken ones on eBay. And also aftermarket fix cog packs for them.

Ive considered one for the same reasons as you, eidolon. But eBay makes them look unreliable.

Well spotted Jez. I never thought to look on eBay but now you mention it there does seem to be a lot of second hand ones for sale.
Surely if they're as good as the advert claims then people wouldn't be selling them.

We have a V8 Animal. We've a labrador so hoover pretty much every day, best hoover I've ever used. Makes hoovering much less of a chore as it's fast, simple and effective.

Shark NV340 here.

Had the smaller Dyson Animal (DC50?) and found it pretty useless an moved on after about a year. The previous Dyson was decent enough though, only lasted about 3 years though.

Miele master race. We've got one of the cheaper ones but it's brilliant. Can imagine for £200 you could get a beast.

We've had a Dyson DC24 for about 9 years now and still going strong. Replaced the seals as part of a service and had to strip the head down after sucking up some plastic and nearly overheating the motor. But still going strong.
