Valheim

Whats this game like? Ive seen all the rave about it but dont know anything about the game.

Vikings in the afterlife. Essentially a survival game with RPG elements (level up your skills in various areas such as wood cutting, running, spears, etc) played in 3rd person. Chop trees down, build stuff, hunt some walking meat, fight the odd creature. gather resources and expand and explore.

Its quite simple and I find it pretty relaxing. For £15 its a steal. Watch a few videos. If you like Ark or 7 Days to Die, you will be fine with this but its not as chaotic.

I was put off this game when I saw it on Steam by three things:

1) It's early access. That usually means a game that's incomplete, buggy and will probably never be finished.
2) Vikings, yeah! I'm not fond of the fashion for romanticising those brutal murdering slavers.
3) Multiplayer only. I don't want a multiplayer game. Especially a PvP one, which any viking game would obviously be since vikings were raiders who attacked other people. That's what "viking" means - "raider".

It was only by chance that I found out that (despite the advertising for the game) none of those things are true. The "viking" thing is a very thin veneer that doesn't really have anything to do with vikings and doesn't have much to do with old Norse culture either (just a thin smear of a general tone of parts of it). The game works fine as single player and there is no PvP in the multiplayer. It's debatable whether it's an early access game because it's more complete than many games are on release.

Once I've finished my current playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077, I'll be playing Valheim. I'm already thinking about housebuilding, which is a good sign.

How did people conquer the mountains then?

As soon as I hit the biome I start to die of frost... but I cant get Wolf skins until I kill them and they live in the mountains I believe? Do you just have to bait them down?

Also whats the big giant bird that you can see in the sky.

I don't know what bird you're referring to as I haven't played it yet, but my guess is that it's probably part of the semi-Norse flavouring and that the bird represents one of Odin's ravens. I've seen a branch/trunk of a giant tree in the sky in a few videos, which is probably meant to imply Yggdrasil, the world tree.

You need to make the frost resistance mead that enables you you withstand freezing until you get wolf skins. Can't remember when/how the mead unlocks, might be building fermenter.

Yeah I have the cauldron and the fermenter, but nothing for Frost mead in my recipes. Ive noticed I need bloodbags.... im assuming the Mountains are not the 3rd level?

I need to go somewhere else first?

It is really good for what it is so far. It gives you a game world and lets you decide on the game it will be. It's the little things that have impressed me - having to consider wind direction when hunting deer or they'll smell you and bolt for example. It does play better with friends in my opinion, but it's very playable single player.

Made the sledge hammer yesterday and put my staghammer to sleep. What a weapon, perfect for killing Bonemass when the time comes!

I like the game, just got bored of it as I feel ive seen it all now, 5 or 6 patches time with 1 or 2 big updates and I'll come back to it to see the new content.

Did you go through the bosses a bit quick?

I've just finished troll proofing my main meadows base and my black forest outpost. I then decided to make a proper hall in my main base using (new to me) core wood framing. A proper port is next on the agenda, so I'm not making any progress on the 2nd boss at all! Thirty hours in so far.

I will be getting three copies of this for me and my kids for their birthdays in a couple of weeks. Really looking forward to it. It sounds great!

Any tips for a group of three starting out? (My kids love building so I doubt we'll be rushing through the content.)

Sounds interesting. Might pick it up and give it try for that price.

This game just gets better, now have 20+ wolves roaming around the grounds and inside my base. Whenever anything spawns in from events they don't last long! Wolves in packs are pretty much unstoppable lol.

We've been blessed with an amazing seed, we have every biome on our starting landmass. The mountain top is also solid all the way through with silver to the point we'll never run out.

Collect and store everything initially, you'll need it all at some point. For building you can never have enough wood. Stone is needed later on (and lots of it) so try and store that too. Any wooden structure not protected by a roof takes rain damage down to 50%. You can eat 3 different types of food at the same time which all give different health/stamina bonuses. Smoke inside buildings kills :D

Don't want to tell you too much as part of the fun for us was in discovering stuff as we went
