Valheim

I really struggled to make much progress on this after venturing out across the water a bit for the other biomes, I think for me the resource gathering felt a bit too slow for a single player experience... to me it felt like they balanced all the resources more for multiplayer, so it all felt depressingly slow as a lone player.

I might give it another go now but bump the resource rates up a notch or two for a nicer experience.

Since you're in a single play game, you could always use one of the cheat commands.

I think that I'd probably want to avoid even looking at how to activate cheat commands, I usually find going down that rabbit hole is a sure-fire way to kill interest when it comes to survival crafting games.
Hopefully, just setting resource gathering to something like 2x and using a mod for better inventory management should be enough Quality of Life to make it enjoyable.

Modding is the way.

I played it during EA with mates and have wonderful and chaotic memories. It was a great game then but very difficult and I recall the infighting as we all scrambled for those precious rare iron vein spots just to make better armours...then we got utterly slaughtered by that slime green boss as our attack turned into a game of Carry On as we all ran round in circles before each of us died lol.

Our base during EA kept being attacked by trolls for some reason as they kept tearing down my stone walls. I'm on the PS5 now so not sure if I cba playing it anymore.

Edit: Just remembered! The boss music ie that tree boss was absolutely fantastic!

I would suggest modding so you can carry metal through the portal. You do have to do the areas in order, you have to upgrade your gear in each biome or you get slaughtered in the next. I remember getting ******** by mosquitoes.

I duly updated my copy (noting that I haven't played it in years) and it now doesn't even start.
I see a terminal flash up but it's gone before I can read it.
I'm now off to uncover what I've managed to break. It's probably some weird Nvidia setting I've turned on in a global setting.

edit:
It was old (oh em gee - 5 years ago!) mod folders that I just deleted and it started up fine.

5 years just to get to 1.0 is shocking, i guess they got rather rich off the pre release and lost any sort of motivation and now need some extra cash!
not feeling the need to get back into this, unless you really love a good grind survivalist game then the only way to get the most out of it is mods (f that wind when in a boat!). MP might reduce the burden somewhat.

irc i got to the plains and gave up, you went from being ok with surviving to very squishy again and well, didnt have the patience to grind another set of tool/weapons/skill etc, but like i say if you love a good grind this is for you :D

Valheim walked so Windrose could run!

Started my new play through over the weekend, didn't get a huge amount done but I've gotten a small starter building put together.
Next step it to upgrade the workbench and then start gearing up for the first boss.

Playing with just a few small mods at the moment; one for better storage management and crafting from chests, one that gives me some dedicated inventory slots for armour and food, and one for an improved hud interface. I've got the loot drops set to 1.5x at the moment but might up it to 2x when I start mining tin as there's very few nodes on my starting island.

I'll probably keep playing until Enshrouded's 1.0 next month, but unsure if I'll continue much once that is released.

I've totally forgotten the gameplay loop.
I can update the workbench? I've got the things that sit by it (chopping block and tanning rack) but does it need something else?

Only just unlocked the smelting thingy. Not even sure how to use that.
I'll have to watch a newer 'let's play' video or something.

The gameplay loop is pretty much explore current area, gear up, kill area's boss. They may have added other bits to the loop with 1.0, but I'd be surprised if they did.
If I remember correctly, there's 2 more pieces that upgrade the workbench level some more... one of them when you're making bronze gear, the other was a fair bit later.

The smelter is ore in one side, coal in the other.
Initially copper and tin, which you turn into bronze on the forge table.

Workbench can be upgraded upto level 5. First 2 are fairly easy and can be done based on materials found in meadows. The next upgrade (Adze) requires bronze and the one after (tool shelf) requires iron (found in swamp) and obsidian (found in mountains). As you upgrade the workbench it unlocks crafting of new tools and upgrade the existing ones. Same goes for the other crafting structures like like forge, cauldron, black forge etc. The smelter is as mentioned above, easier to smelt the metals until copper but mining iron is a grind.

I loved this game back then, put many hours in. But couldn't play it when mistlands came out it was horrible. I probably couldn't be bothered starting from scratch again to be honest.

You don't have to mod to do that, there's a setting, you can also multiple pickups. Good quality of life updates.
I feel like it needs better inventory management though. Seperate slots for armour, no weight for food.

Same - played a lot before a break. Came back for Mistlands and hated it - shoehorning magic in and being constantly hit by creature you cannot see was no fun. Will give it one more go after I finish Palworld.

If I play with a mate again I'm not having the metal portal restriction, it's BS nonsense and wastes so much time.

I liked Mistlands, hated Ashlands, we never completed it and just took a break. Performance was dire and the zone just felt filled with countless mobs that spawned continuously. It was lazy combat compared to Mistlands (which at least had verticality and mist).

Started playing this again, not played since 5 years ago.

About 7 of us started fresh, still a great game and looking forward to seeing what they have added. See what crazy assed build we will do this time round.

Took a couple of goes to like the Mistlands but the Ashlands just reminded me of "Souls like" games so relentless same enemy respawns that became annoying. Lots of dying.

I think I only made it to the plains during my last time playing, I found the biome from hell with far too many mosquitos and blobs and ended up stopping there.
This time I'm going to make sure I gear up way more and prepare myself for the plains and beyond.
