I've had a search and any threads about this game are old.
I've just finished it and it's been amazing!
This thread is really just to bring it to the attention of anyone who might have missed it as it's really not gotten the attention it deserves.
I really can't figure out why either?? It's won a bunch of awards, it's a great strategy game, it's a great role playing game, has an awesome story (loosely based on World War II but re-told in fictional, slightly surreal and fantastically stylised way), and is possibly the best presented game I've ever seen. It looks beautiful from start to finish.
I won't review it, because I'm not that eloquent and there are plenty of better qualified people who have already done so, so I'll link one below, but here's a basic overview of the game structure:-
The story is told through the pages of a book, which is really just a retrospective of the deeds of a group of militia called Squad 7.
These are the guys who's lives you follow (and control in battle).
The pages are broken into several segments as a comic book would be, and the majority of these segments tell the next brief part of the story. Once per chapter one of the segments is the actual playable part of the game....
The story telling segments look superb, they have the appearance of watercolour and they follow each of the characters quite closely, to the point where you really become quite attached and interested in them, and are deeper than I expected from a game.
As you'd expect from a game based on WWII, there is persecution, revenge, religion, love, hate, birth death, even some humor, etc, etc.....
The battle segments are 3rd person. You start with a briefing, followed by a map showing your starting positions.
You chose the characters you wish to use (bearing in mind not only their personalities, who they work well with, their additional abilities etc.. but also their class(Scout, Trooper, Lancer(anti tank), Sniper, Engineer)).
Each class obviously has different characteristics and most importantly has different ranges of movement.
Really simply, the heavier weapons classes can't move far but can do a great deal of damage, scouts and engineers cant move a long way but aren't as powerful.
There are fineries, such as cover, weak points on tanks, head shots etc, meaning making smart choices with Scouts can be as powerful as brute force with Troopers.
Plus you can use the terrain to your advantage and as you progress you can spend the experience points and cash you earn from successful missions on levelling your characters and upgrading your weapons, and beyond that specific characters have additional personal abilities....
It, like all classics is easy to learn, hard to master.
There are bosses, there's variety in the levels (frontal assaults, stealth, everything between), and they are very well balanced with slight increases of difficulty and length as each chapter progresses.
Wiki
It's fun, rewarding, has great replayability and I'll admit even had a moment that brought a lump to my throat.
It's loved by everyone who's played it on here, and I'm hoping a few people will come along to confirm.
So... If you like RPG's, RTS's or anime, then you have to play this game.
Go on then!! Go get it

you can save whenever you want.....
