Value of Life?

Go to Spain. They have stray cats all over the place. I've witnessed locals kicking the cats, using boiling water to scare them off, throwing knives/forks.

Just how the world turns. It's not wrong in my opinion. Those cats are nasty. I fed them bits of food and they'd hiss and claw at you from under the tables.

Domesticated animals should be treated with ultimate care. But not pests/vermin.

I used to work on campsites in France and they had similar problems, ironically it was the do-gooders that made the problem worse.

During the summer season tourists would feed the kittens, they would thrive then go on to have more kittens, then come winter everyone leaves and most of the cats die, a few survive and then go on to start the cycle again :( This is why I never feed stray animals, it just perpetuates the problem.

Years ago I would have thought nothing of killing flies, ants etc. Now I don't do it, I've become soft :p

Years ago?! You've only been alive for about 14 years! :o

I don't kill flies etc for the simple reason that the ensuing mess is unpleasant

I'm the same, even though they annoy me in the summer I hate the mess they make when I end them with a newspaper.

The value of the life is relative to how useless & annoying I find the being living said life so the more annoying and useless somthing is the less valuable it becomes!

E.g
A Fly = extremely annoying Therefore expendable.

A Spider = Not annoying and actually very useful therefore welcome in this life.

I dont understand anyone who can kill a cat, makes me very sad and annoyed! Some evil git killed my last cat. My girlfriend and I were gutted for days :( our current cat is a house cat only. We won't let him out of the house knowing what evil people are about now.

Many vegetarians do eat fish, its vegans that don't.

I cannot agree - pescetarians eat fish but are otherwise nominally vegetarian. However a vegetarian does not eat fish or other meat. Vegans don't eat dairy products or eggs.

If your point is that people tend to feel more compassion to things they can empathise with then that's a fair comment, I'm not sure why you brought vegetarians into it though.

I was hoping that with reference to the vegetarians or pescetarians (however they wish to call themselves) who shriek away from steak while happily eating salmon I could illustrate the bigotry of those that would happily kill a moth or a fly but would become furious at the sight of someone stomping on a kitty.

People automatically make judgements on the value of life of living organisms, be that animals or plants (yes, plants are living organisms, just because they don't scream when you cut them doesn't mean they don't hurt, even if in a different way that you and I perceive it). I just think that this attitude of discriminating against the value of any living thing because of how fluffy and cute it looks is bigotted and all people display it to a degree even subconsciously. Having said that I also think it's natural, it's just the way our brains are wired I guess so you can't change it, some people will feel more compassionate about a moth than others and some will even value their cats and dogs over other people's lives. Intelligence of the animal should play no role in how we feel about killing it. While some cases show signs or mental ilness (i.e. torturing etc) we just need to accept that people have different values and perceptions than us and no matter how high the ground we wish to take is we are still at fault for the same errors at one level or another.

I rest my case.

However there is a lot tied up in humanity in how you treat animals, hence why halal is a bit of a dodgy subject.

(yes I went there :p)

I'm a soft arse when it comes to animals/insects, I just let them be unless it's making a noise then I open some windows and let it bugger off, spiders can stick around, they're ok

I have no problem killing for food though, I eat meat so I kill animals, simple, I hate those people who say" aww how can you hurt the little bambi?" then if you offer them venison they never decline
