Valve 'Probably' Done With Single-Player Games

If HL3 is released with no form of single player gaming experience at all, I will photograph myself eating a hat and post it on here.

Call them clueless if you like, no-one actually includes Half Life: Deathmatch as being part of either game as a multiplayer component. Your post still made you look like an uninformed tool.

Uninformed because the other posters pretended there were virtually no multiplayer component to Half Life 1/2? Yeah, alright. Never mind the fact they came out at exactly the same time. Just because they weren't available from the same menu screen doesn't mean they had no single/multiplayer component.

'Half Life had no multiplayer version even though there was a whole separate game called Half Life: Deathmatch' won't wash with anyone with more than a brain cell and a half.

HL Team/Deathmatch is no different from CoD Team/Deathmatch. Why should one be considered multiplayer and the other one not? The multiplayer came with HL2 as well, not isolated like the first.

Last time I checked, Portal was the only single player game they did, what are you bitching about?

I know exactly what you're saying. But think about it, why would they make an announcement to say "business as usual, chaps"?

This statement probably means something other than "all our single-player games will continue to have MP add-ons".

It probably means "our focus is less on the SP experience and more on the MP experience."

See Portal 2 for an example. Less dev time for the SP component, most likely.

You came into the thread and posted a ridiculous "Portal is there only SP game so what are you bitching about". I'm sorry but on what level, next to Half-Life 1 and 2, does that not make you look like an idiot?

Deathmatch is a completely seperate game thats done using Half Life 2 as a base. Looking at a Half Life 2 box (via google) it doesn't even mention multiplayer, well it does, but its referring to CS:S, or then on the Orange Box, but its referring to TF2.

Oh and 1 more thing:

"Single-player
Steam Achievements
Steam Cloud
Captions available
HDR available
Controller enabled
Includes Source SDK"

Taken from Steams list of what features HL2 has. I don't see Multiplayer on there, do you?

Edit: Speaking of the steam store, is it working? Its stopped loading and gives me an error message now saying its offline ><

You didnt even read the article though, they clearly say no more standalone singleplayer, i.e. only co op, the half life games had a seperate multiplayer and singleplayer

So if CoD didn't list multiplayer as a feature, but it still came with it as an optional install - you would say CoD didn't have multiplayer?....

okay then.....

A pointless argument since they are not talking about death match style multiplayer, but a co op thing, what they are saying is that portal 3 (or EP3 or whatever) would have no single player campaign, only a co op campaign.

Portal 2 has co-op
L4D games are multi
Orange Box had TF2
HL2 had CS:S and HL2:DM

Only singleplayer only was episode 1.

Makes sense since if you include a multiplayer aspect then people cant pirate it. I wouldnt worry about them not making a HL3/ep3, just expect it to come with a multiplayer game.

They aren't saying HL3 would only have co-op campaign, They'd be shooting theirself and the franchise in the foot, and they know that. They're likely saying it will have some form of co-op integrated along-side the SP.

However, I'm just reading into the bizarre reasoning in this thread that a Team/Deathmatch component in some games is considered multiplayer, and not in others.

and still not getting the point, HL has a stand alone single player portion, their future games wont.

Are you unable to read?

The makers of such acclaimed single-player video games as Portal and Half-Life 2 want all of their future games to support connected, non-solo gaming, in some way, at all levels.

HL1/HL2/Portal 1 all had seperate single player stories, with completely seperate multiplayer aspects. Even Portal 2 has a completely seperate single player story.

Tell me the difference between CoD team/deathmatch, UT 2004/3 Team/Deathmatch and HL2 Team/Deathmatch.

What makes the first two any more official than the last one?

The first 2, you buy 1 game and it has a single player and a multi player, HL2DM is a stand alone multiplayer game like team fortress 2 or cs:s
