*** Valve Steam Machine ***

$100 for the Steam Controller is pretty bad value. I paid £13 for my Gamesir Nova Lite with Hall Effect sticks or if you really must have TMR you could get the Gamesir Cyclone 2 for £30. Both these controllers work with PC, Mac, Android and Switch / Switch 2. People have been conditioned into paying ridiculous prices for controllers by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.

The Steam Machine is 100% going to be terrible value if this controller is anything to go by.
It's pretty much the only option you have if you want to play mouse based games from the couch though...

For every good third party controller there are many many crap ones.

The average person probably will pay for a Microsoft , Sony or Nintendo one purely off the name alone

I’ve just got a great 8bitdo pad but I bet the average parent etc has no idea of the brand and would dismiss it

I dont see how this is bad value when the Sony DualSense Edge Wireless-Controller is double the price  And the Xbox Elite controller is £150. Yet the Steam controller has more features than both of them.

Same thoughts here, it’s almost as if some expect valve to release it cheap just cause it’s valve

Compared to a Sony or Xbox controller it represents good value but there are some 3rd party alternatives that offer similar for less eg. Gamesir.

Depends a bit on perspective - something can still not be 'good value' even if there are products with worse value out there :p

The fact we're being conditioned to perceive £150-£200 for a ****ing controller as being in any way a reasonable amount of money for something that probably still only costs about £15 per unit to design, build and ship is utterly depressing :p

I think my perspective is that the Steam Controller is pretty reasonably priced.

It sits between the GameSir Cyclone 2 (£55.99 RRP), or Flydigi Vadar 5 (£90), Gamesir G7 Pro (£90-£140). Maybe it could have been £10-20 cheaper, but it isn't egregiously priced. Software support will be phenomenal (even if Steam's controller support for anything is great) and some of these other brands don't have the best support. Also this controller will be very serviceable with official replacement parts.

Either way I do think it's a golden period for PC controllers (and Switch/Android as well). Wall to wall good choices in all price ranges. Valve leading the way on software support. There used to be a time when third-party controllers meant bad, or even first party console controllers weren't any good. Now it's the main first-party manufacturers with their insistence on continuing to use inferior ALPS potentiometers for their controllers who are releasing inferior products.

I would never pay £150-200 for a controller, which is why I don't have the Edge or Elite.

I do however paid for the Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 controllers, a Cylone 2, 8bitdo Ultimate. It doesn't take £200 to get a good quality, well specced controller these days. What I find expensive is the official Xbox controller. The tech in that has hardly changed from the 360 era and it doesn't even come with a dock and it cost more than my 8bitdo ultimate. It brings no new tech to the table.

The PS5 controller at least have adaptive triggers.

The Cyclone 2 is the bargain of the lot though, sure the stand is a bit crap but at least there is one.

Hot take...best controller of this generation. Playing stuff like Astro Bot, or Returnal genuinely felt next level. The impact of the rain, or the haptics kicking in for various Astro Bot levels. A generational jump in a similar vein to the the Nintendo 64 controller and some others. Although I don't use mine with PC as you need it to be wired and even then it isn't always supported as much as Sony obviously do on their consoles. And I'm someone that typically prefers the A-symmetrical layout of the Xbox/Nintendo Pro controller. It's just a shame it's so susceptible to drift. A year ago I had to buy some soldering kit to fit TMR modules. So you upgrade/refurbish a Dualsense to make it even better, but that's true of a lot of controllers and it can be a pain to work on as it's not really supported to replace parts.

Like you I've not bought first-party pro (Edge/Elite) controllers as I just don't see the value.

Yeah. its out of stock now.

a lot of complaints on social media about payment errors.

People questioned the price during the announcement and here we are. The controller has sold out.

Ugh why does everything have to be limited stock these days. I was in two minds about getting one anyway, but I guess this decided for me.

Ebay is already filled with them
