*** Valve Steam Machine ***

As others have said it will still sell out, but then some people just want the shiny shiny.. even if it's a poor value proposition...

Anything you buy in this area will be poor value now. PC hardware is more expensive than it was 2 years ago. Same for PS5 and Xbox consoles, even subscriptions service have taken a increase.

People complaining about the price, don't know why you all surprised giving being members of a computer forum and seeing how everything has increases over the last few months.

If you want prebuilt, then this is slightly better I believe (although still only 8GB VRAM - not sure if OCUK allow you to swap parts, but a 16GB GPU, e.g. 5060Ti is ~£200 more). If you really want value for money then get on the MM

The form factor of the steam machine negates the pricing for me. For a few quid more you get that sexy form factor.

Does show that it's not bad value, it's just bad value because it's marketed as a home console and not a niche gaming pc (which we have always anchored as more expensive than a console).

I'm really ****** at Valve for allowing you to buy it with the Steam Controller included, so anyone who buys it with that essentially gets to skip the long controller reserve queue. As someone who reserved my controller on May 10th, my payment schedule according to Valve is 2027! Yet console buyers get to skip that queue; it's bloody disgusting. They should be selling it console only and fulfilling controller orders first.
I had signed up for the barebones model only but having read this decided to sign up for the models that come with a Steam Controller as well :D

I think knowing this thing has less gpu power than the base ps5 is gonna put a lot of people off, or even make them question is it truly worth it. It does have a way better processor though.. I guess.

CPU doesn't mater much at this performance level, because the gpu can't push those frames that need a good cpu

The average Battlefield player age typically falls between 25 and 35 years old

The average age of the Call of Duty (CoD) player base is approximately 28 years old

These stats are sad, it means gaming is probably going to have a major collapse within 20 years because the people playing battlefield today are the same kids who played battlefield 15 years ago, the games aren't getting new gamers, it's mostly old gamers playing games they played when they were kids and that can only go on for so long, eventually the average age of a cod or battlefield player will be 50?

This is why you seeing all these retro consoles being re-released. More gamers are aging than new ones coming in.

Valve are selling a machine that has slightly less power and less storage than a 6 year old PS5 Digital console that released at £359 and they want £938 for it. Terrible terrible value.

The world has gone to ****, even PS5 Digital is almost £500 now.

£1000+ to not play the latest games is comical, if so many are doing that anyway without a steam machine why would they spend that much to continue playing the same old games. Surely you'd want spend 4 figures to get an upgraded gaming experience, not the same one otherwise why spend £1k+?).

Can exclude the 512GB model because that gets you 3* modern games installed before running out of disk space.

Maybe it's true Valve built it based on steam hardware survey, the "masses", but the bit people are forgetting is those same people have refused for years to upgrade their systems which is why 1080p gaming and 8GB GPUs are still rife according to the surveys each year. Nobody in those groups is buying PC HW because of the price, why would they spend more now to still have the same?

It’s Steam, it’s ok. Price, performance, it doesn’t matter.
Now if a PlayStation or Xbox released at these prices with outdated hardware there would be an uproar.

Cheapest ps5 and four years to play online is nearly £700 these days!

If you pay nearer £1k (still cheaper than many SM models) you can get a 5060 Ti (still 8gb model) and 1tb SSD. A 16gb model is definitely possible for c.1.2k.

Was there any mention on what the intended price was before comportment prices went up. Did the strait of Hormuz block play anything in the price?

No and no.

This is more AI and crypto mining than the war (it's not 0% effect but it's not the main reason).

The only reference I can see about what price it could be was Linus asked and they told him "look at what the difference between the deck was and is now." Which is like £200-£250 hike?

I believe there was a mention of a shortage of FR-4 (due to the war) in one of the articles I read, which is used to make PCBs, but probably a minor factor compared to the AI bubble.

Oh absolutely, which TBH is the only reason I'm considering it at all!

It's bad value when you compare the actual price now to what it should have been if it weren't for all the AI related price increases, however given the current market, it's about right I think. Still a bit of a bitter pill to swallow when you compare what you could have bought 12-18 months ago for similar money.

That doesn't necessarily mean gaming is going to have a major collapse, just the specific games that are mostly built on nostalgia these days.
