*** Valve Steam Machine ***

I cancelled my order. I just couldn't justify that amount of money for what you get in terms of performance and for me, that's the most important part of the package.

Was tempted by someone selling one at RRP on another forum, but I can't really justify it when I recently bought a Legion Go 2 and installed SteamOS on it, along with a PS5, Switch 2 and gaming PC!

Would be convenient to just switch on and play, and for stuff like ps3 emulation etc. But maybe not for nearly £900..

Got an update on the security breach today :

"While CEVA has not yet concluded their full internal investigation, we have learned that the attack was limited to a subset of their systems. In particular, the system that processed your Steam hardware order was not affected. There is currently no indication that your data was accessible to the attacker at any time during this incident."

I call bullsh!t.
My steam email is an old 25 year+ email account I don't use for anything else anymore. I get a handful of emails a month if that. I have had spam phishing emails daily, in German, since the date of the leak.

...and I don't.

Did you get the email from Valve saying "While CEVA has not yet concluded their full internal investigation, we have learned that the attack was limited to a subset of their systems. Yes. Doesn't mean it is accurate.

Love the form factor, and SteamOS, compatibility with games seems great now. The price just kills any excitement for me atm. Maybe if it drops a decent amount in the future.

Me too, but I don't think that day is coming any day or years soon.

Steam deck price? When the Deck was like under £500 for the mid tier verion, so had this been like £600....may be £700. It would've been a buy all day long.

Yeah I think all the people trying to wait this stuff out are just making it more expensive for themselves when they fold.

I was getting some FOMO with this device, but couldn't justify it when I've got a decent gaming PC, Switch 2, Legiom Go 2, PS5, and a Geforce Now Ultimate sub.

But yesterday a deal popped up on Ali for the GMKTec K12 barebones for £190!

So have jumped on that and hope to install SteamOS and use it for high end GFN streaming and emulation purposes :)

Hurray the firmware fix to sort the wake from sleep bug has hit stable and is good to update to!

Something I'd gotten used to a little bit it's nice that the problem has gone.

Treated myself to Elden Ring for the steam machine just to see what it runs like, gets really good performance at 1440p, shame I'm not very good at it

Woke up to my invite to purchase this morning. This is for the 512gb. I have the controller still in its box ready to go. I’ve owned a steam deck OLED for a couple of years so very familiar with the setup/tweaking involved.

I need a bit of swaying either way guys - do I bite the bullet?

Curveball/consideration - My role is currently at risk, and it would be a pretty irresponsible financial decision! My wife is telling me to go for it as I have plenty of savings….hmmm….

Had one, loved the form factor, it's tiny. It was quiet, not silent, but very quiet whilst gaming. The few games I tried worked well, most games you'll be at 1080/1440p with a mix of medium/high settings and unless you are digital foundry you probably won't see much difference from sofa distance. There was one game I couldn't get to work no matter what I tried, which was Cronos New Dawn. Worked fine on my main rig but wouldn't run smooth on the SM. Tried different Protons, etc, it wasn't smooth. This was my first experience of gaming on Linux so could be a me/knowledge problem.

I considered the 512GB one and had one reserved when it first became available, but in the end I couldn't get past the price : performance ratio or the lack of any real upgrade path beyond storage and adding more RAM. I opted to build something for a similar (slightly higher) budget which isn't as quite compact as the Steam Machine, but is vastly more capable, can be easily upgraded later down the line (probably with parts from my current main PC since both are AM5 based) and runs Steam OS so I'm still getting all the benefits there without having to wrestle with Windows when I just want to fire up a game late in the evening.

Don't know what the resale value is now but a month or so ago CeX were paying more than the retail price.

You're unlikely to lose much (if any) money if you buy and resell.

That's not the case now, the cash buy price from CEX has dropped a lot, it was down to £713 for an A grade 512GB.

Had one since July (think it's page 9/10 for my over excited IT'S HERE posts)

If you've got a little saving that can be used for it (your wife sounds like a legend encouraging you) and the use case of a close to silent medium powered pc for the living room there is no better option out there and it'll be a good while before someone (beelink I'm peering at you) to come up with a decently priced knockoff.

3 months in and I'm still really happy, it's not a full on revolution but 20/10 convenient for making pc gaming living room compatible which is well worth it and I've had a great time gaming on it.

Useful things to remember are that the NVME is easy to upgrade so the 512gb option is the 100% desirable one to get and most of the launch/early days problems have been patched out into the stable channel leaving it to be a very very good end user experience
