*** Valve Steam Machine ***

still happy with mine even though it was a bit of an impulse buy after a decade away from pc gaming and being so impressed with the steam deck I won early this year.

I was looking at itx builds for ages and in all honesty I’m glad I’ve not had to read another “will this case fit x.” “What will my performance/temps be like with x” “am4 or am5” “are any flex psus quiet but not cost a kidney”.

I realise it’s not for everyone especially those who want to tinker and extract every bit of value for money (like I used too and why I’m a member here :p).

But for me the positives of the machine are exactly what I wanted from an itx build and I don’t really do enough AAA gaming or are fussed about graphics enough (I completed cyberpunk on the deck) for the negatives to affect me.

Yeah 100% having the same feeling at this point, really pleased it's been a month of it sitting smartly under the tv just doing hassle free tv gaming without falling down all the rabbit holes of messing about with temps, different components and all the other rabbit holes that have been fun before.

Impressed how well it coped in the mega heat today, didn't seem to be affected by the stupidly high ambient temperature and just did what was asked (game!)

Hurray there's a firmware update sorting the random waking from sleep and caught the random cpu doesn't quite wake up from sleep bug (happened once and a reboot sorted it)

Had mine for a few weeks but decided to move it on; kept the controller though to use with PC. Managed to get long HDMI 2.1 cable from PC through a wall to TV, then DisplayFusion app on phone to switch monitor profile. Bit of faffing about but worth it, just have to turn PC on myself :-P

In the past (2012) I did the same(ish). It worked OK most of the time but max back then was 1080p at 100Hz(ish), so I also tried HDMI over ethernet (Steam streamer) from another room which also worked most of the time.

It was the "doesn't work" bits which became annoying. That's always been the attraction of consoles - they "just work" - while PCs in the living room, not so much.

I had my confirmation email for a 2TB machine. Actually bought it, but later in the evening asked for, and got, a refund.

I really like the concept of it, but currently have a steamdeck docked in the livingroom that my kiddo uses mostly, and even though it really struggles with certain games, playes the majority of what he wants currently.

If it were the 512GB version I may have kept it, but over a grand is just a tad too hefty for me currently. I might look into an ARM4 secondhand build instead, which I know I'd get significant more bang for buck from.

Pretty sure you'll get your money back plus some if you buy it then resell because you're not happy with it.

Seems like a safe bet at the moment.

Yeah even the cex cash price is holding at about rrp, pretty good sign after two months
Buckled, spent the day watching various Steam Machine videos on YouTube and checked CEX price and I could get my money back so presently risk free. Thanks for the heads up. Should hopefully have it for the weekend to play with :D

Hmm! How to get the Steam Controller working with GTA 5...:o
I was going to say it works fine, but on PC I need to use a mouse on title screen to select single player, while on Steam Deck I can use touch screen to choose. Other than that it works fine with Steam Controller. I have yet to try on Steam Machine.

I joined the waitlist on the 22nd July and today got an email from Steam saying I was on the reservation queue for the 512/w controller. I didn't think it would happen this quickly.

I've got a ps5 pro and a decent pc (5900x 6800xt 32gb ram) but I'm still going to buy it - it's too cute to resist! Just wish it had handles on it for the ultimate gamecube vibes!!

I joined the waiting list for 512GB with no controller some time back, and got invited last week.
Struggling to justify as doubt it would be used.

The link allowing me to order still works, despite them warning it only lasts for 3-4 days.

I have no intention to, but see that they are selling onwards for +£100 RRP.

Just got an email from Steam that they are getting ready to ship my 512GB model and controller.

I've spent the past few days watching Steam Machine gameplay videos and "Steam Machine" builds and pricing up building a PC myself. I could build something myself but it would be more expensive than the SM, run hotter, be louder and bigger but perform better and be upgradeable. For the room and the space the SM will be going it's the much better fit for me.

That's the main appeal for me. Small size, low power and reasonable performance. With the long, hot summers we are getting these days even the ps5 generates too much heat and I don't game on my pc for the same reason. I think this will work out really well in the long run

Exactly, it's near PS5 performance but half the size of the Xbox Series X. Obviously I would have preferred it was cheaper or more powerful but we've got what we've got.

With everything going on with PS and Xbox I'm not intending to buy next gen models, will be sticking with PC as my main gaming platform and a Switch 2 for Zelda. So might as well be adding more games now to my Steam backlog :D

For those awaiting the Steam Controller, I just received an email asking to confirm if I was still interested in purchasing one. I placed my order on the 9th May, with an estimated delivery date of December or later ... so it appears Valve are getting through their waiting list quicker than expected.
