*** Valve Steam Machine ***

I have only this minute found out that Steam overlay has built in .md Notes functionality per game... I have been using other apps to do it.

Think it's only a little more to get to the ram as well (but didn't fancy going that far just to see if there's one stick or two).

Its a LOT more involved getting to the RAM. It will be one stick of RAM, Valve have already said they were unable to source ANY volume of 8GB DDR5 SODIMMS so the entire production run is 1 x 16GB.

Ah ok I didn’t realise they’d officially said it’s only 1 x 16gb in there, makes sense to get it moving at least.

Think I followed the guide to the nvme but then closed it not looking to the get to the ram section

Next challenge is to game on the tv remote! Didn't quite grasp the scope of the CEC but it made me smile being able to put it back to sleep with my tv remote and dream of point and click adventures with it

I'd be interested to know how it compares to the BC250 in terms of both performance and how loud the fan is.

Well, as I am now owner of pingwing's old BC-250 setup, I may be able to help with some benchmarking now that I've got to grips with the hardware and setup over the weekend to the detriment of my sleep pattern :o

I've unlocked the extra 16 CUs, OC's the CPU and GPU and put a quieter fan in place. Unfortunately, still need to upgrade the thermal interface on the VRAM and got some phase change pads on the way that should help on the APU over thermal paste. Not much I can do about the annoying low hum of the PSU fan though without ripping it out for a Noctua (defeating the point of it being budget) or replace the PSU altogether.

I think the Steam Machine is mainly always going to have an advantage over DIY efforts though in terms of size, noise, CEC and suspend/resume.

Edit:

Doing some stability testing still. For some reason Bazzite limits my FPS in "Deck/Game Mode" to 60 FPS, so having to do this from the desktop. Thought I'd see how this BC-250 does with CP2077 with some RT (the RT Medium and High are both well under 30fps and in now way going to be playable). Not posting a screenshot, but it gets a respectable 69 avg fps on the Ultra preset at 1080p without turning into jet engine mode. So the DIY Steam Machine does surprisingly well and would be interested to see how the real SM handles it.

When I first heard about the BC250, I hadn't heard of anyone unlocking the extra CUs. Watched a video on it recently, and it is a nice extra bit of performance that can be clawed out of it. I've really considered one over the last while, but the prices are so much higher than they were.
Awesome little boards though!

Not much of a review but the SM does what I want when fed through an Onkyo box to the TV/speakers.

CEC works.

Streaming games from main machine works when you need heavy lifting.

Bluetooth pairing for ancient kb/trackpad works.

Logitech game controller (ancient USB from 15 years ago) works.

Adult daughter's nintendo controllers work fine (so she says).

Pair up a bluetooth kb/mouse and head to the desktop where all the stuff that worked on the deck pretty much works better here.

No noise. No maintenance. PC which plays games in your living room and doesn't use Windows.

Random additions from my weekend, got the Mac touch pad and wireless keyboard from my old mini connected no hassle and now navigating desktop mode to do get GOG games set up. They both work as well as when connected to the mini which is a nice experience, makes me appreciate the LTT video using it as a regular pc.

Forgot steamos is ultra barebones when you first set it up and I had to wait a min to download Firefox as well!

Turns out I'm an idiot with Lutris, it can do 99% of the work for you if you link it with your GOG account and there's not bonus work to get things installed (the 00's linux experience is not present here at all)

It's been a few weeks since release.

With all the blow up about the price, plenty of people have purchased one and happy with it.

Looks like the price didn't put many people off like some originally thought.

Nothing better to spend their money on with all other tech being sucky at the moment I suppose.

Will be interested to see if Valve ever publish any sales figures so we can see whether the long wait lists are actually because of massive demand or because they only made 50,000 units in the first place :p

I have cancelled mine seeing reviews and other peoples opinions it’s just not worth it really. Other than being a small box it is woefully underpowered and building something far better for similar price is a better option or spending a little bit more gets you considerably better. As Steam OS is free you can put it on anything you build and have a much better experience.

I completely forgot to cancel my reservation. Had the email today to buy so ordered it will probably just offer it to someone for cost price will see how I feel when it arrives.

Should be easy to pass up based on your previous comment where you apparently cancelled it :)

Kind of shows how many went to with the crowd writing it off. Then pop up later on "oh yeah! I forgot I made a reservation and it's being shipped"

Many in this thread have done the same but of course, they are going to keep quiet to save the embarrassment
