Quite simple really, Why do I sometimes get asked if I'd like a VAT receipt and other times not? I go to the same petrol station week in week out but depending on who is serving, some ask me, some don't

Why do they seem to think I should be able to claim it back?

If you are doing business journeys, you'll need VAT receipts to be able to claim your mileage allowance.

Why some ask and others don't, probably just down to the operator. I normally have to ask for mine.

I dont bother asking, i just give the receipts to the customer anyway. I only get a very small amount of people who do ask for them. If they don't want the receipts they just ask me to throw it in the bin.

I probably don't ask mind as recently it just seemed like i was questioning the customer a hell of a lot which is annoying.

When I worked at an esso we were told to ask everyone.

In reality, when a baseball cap wearing chav rocks up, puts a fiver in and pays cash; I didnt ask.

Can't you just give it them with the other receipt, without asking?

I have to put in VAT receipts to claim my mileage allowance from work. As I have a single car I guess that means that they claim back the VAT on my personal usage too which I guess is a bit naughty.

I have never understood why when I go to Sainsburys they put the proof of purchase and card transaction on a single reciept, yet in the fuel station I get:-

Proof of purchase
Card Docket
VAT reciept.

I think they exclude food purchases from the VAT reciept?

I've never been asked to submit a VAT receipt for my fuel for my mileage ?

I just thought it was for people who claim for fuel through their business, rather than the miles themselves?

For my mileage claims Norfolk County Council started insisting upon VAT receipts about 3 years ago IIRC. Prior to that I didn't have to submit them.

Sainsburys as mentioned give you three receipts and the VAT summary doesn't have any food purchases on it IME.

I've never seen three, most petrol stations I've seen just have a separate VAT Receipt.

Unless they have a non-integrated PDQ machine, that gives its own receipt.

Generally the machines with no card reader only give one sort of receipt - a VAT receipt, so there's still only 2

5p off vouchers just started again as well :)

 Sainsburies have been doing them recently too.

VAT receipts are needed by a lot of people for claiming fuel back, i'd have thought that was obvious (:p), the reason you have been asked by some and not others is that retail staff are very variable. Why VAT receipts are not issued as standard i do not know.
