Vauxhall Astra VXR - Need opinions

How can that car possibly be worth 10 grand?

Have to agree, a friend of mine very recently purchased his 58 plate Arden Blue Vauxhall Astra VXR - I can't remember his mileage but it was a one owner, FVSH, and I'm sure he paid around the 7K mark. The one you've listed OP does seem very expensive! You have to remember this is a 6/7 year old car here and imo (like others have said) it certainly isn't worth that much!

Looking at the garages website they seem to be very keen on finance. Whenever they break it down to weekly payments it kind of reminds me of Yes car credit or one of them dodgy places that have thankfully gone. They use to sell cars for ridiculous money.

On the finance page they are also offering cashback. I bet the APR is astronomical

I drove an Astra VXR at a VXR event. It was a lot of fun to drive.

It's on a garage forecourt. Of course it's overpriced, but it gives you a bit more security if things do go wrong. You could probably haggle at least a grand (or two!) off that price. Look at some other VXRs before you hand over any cash though.

When I was looking for an x-Trail, there was one at a local garage near me that I liked, but was convinced was massively overpriced. I ended up driving around half the country test driving other x-Trails that were much cheaper. They were all cheaper for a good reason, and only by driving all of them, could I tell the differences. In the end I went back to the garage and after haggling , I bought the "good one" for a grand more than all the others. 60k miles later I'm still glad I got the right car, with all the good spec, in good condition.

Basically what I'm saying is, dealer tax aside, cars are generally expensive because they are in good condition, or cheap because they're not. Only occasionally do you get lucky and find someone selling a good car for bargain bucket money.

The best thing to do is have a test drive as let's be honest comments in relation to worms are next to useless :p

I drove both round a soggy Thruxton and the Corsa is a much more enjoyable car to throw around. The Astra is just a traffic light GP car and not a very good one at that. Failing that look into the Mazda 3 MPS, better value than both the Astra and Focus with more power and better spec as standard.

I was the exact opposite when I drove them on a VXR day. I couldn't see why you would bother with the Corsa, when you could get the Astra. I preferred it in pretty much every way.

There is overpriced, and then there is £10,000 for a 7 year old Vauxhall Astra. It's more than overpriced. Plus 'a bit' really is the key word when talking about the security you get from an independant trader. Usually you need to fight for it unless its a particularly decent dealer.

Buy privately if you want value, buy Approved Used if you want security.

The bootlace worm (Lineus longissimus) is one of the longest known animals, with specimens up to 55 metres (180 ft) long and up to 10 centimetres (3.9 in) wide being reported. Its mucus is toxic.[1]

That's more interesting than a 10k, 7 year old Astra.

Yer, no question here, it's way overpriced. But it doesn't hurt to enquire, have a test drive, and attempt to haggle. Just keep the options open.

It's a waste of time - dealers who are THAT overpriced are not suddenly going to haircut 30% off when you start haggling. Somebody gullible will come along and buy it instead.

Shouldn't that be Astra-nomical :p

Edit: I'll get my coat....

If I were looking for a quick hatchback for £10k I'd go for something like this:

Don't get an Astra at least not from the era you're looking at, focuses were better back then. Current generation, I'd drive an Astra over a Focus any day.
