In case I'm included in that, I drive an '02 Astra. I own it because I like it and wanted it, but I certainly wouldn't buy a brand new one.
No, we don't have to consider that at all, because we're not going to suddenly see a decline the availability of used cars just because of some posts on here.
Whilst I agree that every conversation about buying a car decends into an argument about how much money you could save buying a second hand mondeo which is doubtlessly a more reliable car and wont depreciate as much... you have to draw a line of sense somewhere. I think the major point occuring here is that for the money you would spend on a brand new Astra, which is made mostly of plastic and babies, you could use to buy a much more solid and reliable machine from a different manufacturer.
There's nothing wrong with having a brand new first car. There's nothing wrong with "wasting" money on a car that you specifically want. It does kinda ring fair to point out that £13,995 for a New Astra is a lot of money. Even the Volvo C30 would probably be a better choice, they seem to be pretty solid if mildly unexciting.

Just buy the car you want, new or old. Life is about learning lessons and you might look back and think it was a very stupid thing to do, you may look back and not even remember you spunked some cash on a bland mobile, because life's too short and in the grand scale this decision, in your life, might mean bugger all. If every decision in life was rationale or 'managed' to such an extent we'd be called German.

Nope not really aimed at anybody just a feel you get for this place whenever anybody post about a VX.
Such as 'Ashtray' for 'enterprise cars only' etc etc! End of the day life is about personal choices if he wants a new Astra so be it, bit silly and 12yr old like to call a car an 'Ashtray' for short.

Bingo! Can bet you any money cars such as BMW, Merc etc depreciate roughly the same amount!

But if you are buying new GT2's then its not an issue, is it? You are at motoring peak - there is simpy nothing that much better at the task you've bought your car for to get instead. You are loaded. You've enough money that buying a used car instead of a new one has about as much positive effect on your finances as buying a used TV instead of a new one, so there is simply no point.
The same is not the case for people buying new Astras. There exists a range of cars that are better in every possible way than a Vauxhall Astra. The Astras party peice is excellent value for money - but on the used market, due to depreciation. Not on the new market.
A 6 month old Golf, for example, is a better car than a new Astra. A 12 month old Audi A3 is a better car than a new Astra. etc etc, ad finitum.
80% of new Vauxhalls sold in the UK are sold direct into the fleet market. There are more than enough to go around without us needing people to buy them privately
Yes, because obviously the main alternative to a brand new Astra is a 4 year old high mileage car, definately, there is nothing in between, is there?

If you can point me at the threads congratulating people on purchasing brand new BMW diesels privately I'd be grateful to hear it.
Only loaded people can properly afford to be so blase about the money lost by buying a brand new run of the mill car. And if you are that loaded, the Vauxhall dealer is not and should never be first port of call.
New Vauxhalls and Fords are for the fleet market. Buy them after they've finished, or buy a 6 month old one at thousands less. Or better still buy a Golf.
See? Buying brand new Astras makes so little sense it's even got me recommending Golfs!
I don't disagree that a brand new car is a bad idea, but if someone was buying me a brand new one, I certainly wouldn't be complaining. I mean, if one of my family were offering to buy me a new car, I very much doubt I could ask them for a car that is £6k cheaper and pocket that £6k instead.
