Evening all,

My cabinet has finally been upgraded to FTTC but I would like to not have the openreach modem and a router so...

Does anyone have any recommendations for a combined vdsl modem/ ac router.

Thanks

Looks like there are not very many options for this! Can't only see the DSL-AC68 available.

Is the best setup the openreach modem and then router attached? I suspect this will enable less connection drops if rebooting the router for firmware upgrades thus avoiding DLM etc...

Any ideas?

There's also a TP Link one due out but also not AC. TP-LINK TD-W9980

As for what suits you, I guess it depends where it's going. My master telephone socket is in the downstairs hall so I'd prefer an AIO so I don't have to have so many things mounted on the wall.

There is nothing wrong with the Openreach modem. Use that with a standard ethernet router and you'll be fine.

Also I think if you're on certain BT infinity packages, they come with a Home Hub 5 which I think has the integrated vdsl modem and AC wireless.

What's the manufacturer of your cabinet? See: http://fttc-check.alc.im/

If it's a Huawei the best setup as far as I know is the HG612 (Flashed with experimental firmware) and any good router with a WAN port.

I have a HG612 flashed with unlockedgui & nobtagent as a Modem and have the 7800N as the Router and get a 79987/20000Kbps Sync.

7800N handles the throughput no problem. I've tested it and it's capable of 100Mbps through its EWAN port as-well.

Gigabit router.

The majority of Ethernet routers will top out at around 50meg.

It isn't Ethernet that's the limiting factor on routers which can't route as fast as the port allows, it's the chipset.

The Openreach Modem is a 10/100 Modem and you don't need a Gigabit router to reach up to 100Mbps - You only need one with a good chipset. There's no difference between a Gigabit Router & a Fast Ethernet router with a good chipset if it's being used with the Openreach Modem.

Features and Chipset are what you should be looking more towards.

So i'm now trying to decide which AC router to get.

Linksys EA6900
Netgear R7000
Asus RT-AC68U
Asus RT-AC66U
D-link DIR-868L

Thinking about installing Tomato so only the Asus have this option at the moment.

What would people recommend based on experience. I have an Asus N55U however I don't use half the features I just need the high performance and range, mainly due to a new build three storey house covering around 1600sq/ft.
