yea peak output is nice, and makes u feel like the big man. and bhp a litre is good...

especially when thats what you can afford, or enjoy...personally i drive a low cc high output cos it was the best i could afford as a package ... but my next car will be turbo im hoping

the AMG V8 and the GM LSX series V8s are some of the very best engines ever produced. Full of character, great power delivery, incredibly exhaust note, but very poor power/litre

The new Ford 5.0 V8 in the 2011 mustang is very impressive, offering over 400bhp from a 5.0, but its still nowhere near the hp/litre that the VTEC unit offers, so even that isnt enough to stem the insults from the snobs.

I need it explaining. How is it better than, say, an M54B30 with similar power?

You will have to need. If you don't think the Mugen FN2 engine is better than the R26R engine, then i give up.

to be honest, aside from Honda VTEC y0! snobbery about hp/litre i'm not sure of any benefits beyond personal preference for high revving engines.

Which as plenty of people point out - is a marmite thing. Some pople love high revving engines, others hate them because you don't get full performance till you wring its neck.

Which is fine when you're on a B road blast, but crap for all other times. On my way to work today, i dont think i hit the rev limiter once. I just wafted into work on a mixture of 40 limit single carriageway and 70 limit dual carriageway roads. For this type of commute a car with lots of low down power / torque is easier to drive than a high revving VTEC unit.

Horses for courses and all that.
