I use 2 Samsung F1 1tb drives. The 1st is used for OS/apps/games but only use say 100gig max. Am thinking of replacing the F1 with the faster Velociraptor. I know not the biggest bang for the buck, but wondering would the performance increase be noticeable ?

You'd possibly notice it being a little bit more snappier and game levels load faster. Other than that I'm not sure unless you RAID 0 a pair of them.

I use a 150Gb raptor and find it a lot snappier and quicker loading windows / games and tbh, I like the speed. Ive just bought a Velociraptor and expect it to be slightly quicker, but im mostly after the increased storage. I use 110Gb on Vista with everything I need installed. All my documents / music / videos / etc are on a file server in my spare room. And SSD will not be here at the price/performance until at least the back end of next year (Who knows what the next year will bring!).

I have been offered a MTron SSD Mobi 3000 32gig for same price as a Veloci. Hmmmm.... Very tempted. These Mtrons are beating the pants of the main stream SSD brands like Samsung and Crucial, though not as quick as the MemoRights. Still 32gig would only be enough for OS and Apps. Games would need to run of one of my F1's.

Which would still be fine, would be sick to have it :)
A velociraptor is a better all-round solution though, espically for pagefile etc :)

i have 2 150 Raptors Raid 0 and its a lot faster than any 72k drive, as ive tried both to see what was best ^_^

Get the veloci, SSDs will fall in price anyway :)

Now is not the time for SSD's, when Intel gets on board prices will fall sharply but I think it will be another 12-18 months or so before the market shifts into high gear (300MB/150MB Read/Write 300GB+ capacities etc...) and prices fall again.

I`m tempted by the Mtrons too.. how do they feel performance wise, what model are they/how much did they cost and where did you get them? (email me)

Sorry for 20 questions :D

Due to knowing someone in the biz got em for 397 euro each. Ouch you say, and yeah they are expensive. But I have seen sites look for over twice this. I can't say who I got them from as it was really only a once off, not a normal etail purchase, so it would be of no benefit to you (plus would be breaking the rules). They are only 32gig but are the Mtron Pro models. They feel really snappy. Virtually no waiting around opening OS's or loading games. Here is a link to a review a mate of mine did. He was using the slower Mobi 3000 models. Judge for yourself. The question I have is would it be worth just using my 2 x 32gig mtrons for just my OS and swap file, and a Veloci for games/apps. I already have 2 Samsung F1 1TB for data (1 I will be disposing of)

Thanks Flanno. I presume that`s the 7000 model then? if it`s the 6000 you could have got it cheaper but if it`s the 7000 you`ve got it for about £27 less than I can find it. Times that by 2 and you`ve got quite a healthy saving.

Any chance of a hdtack? I know it`s only numbers but would still be interesting to see.

I was looking at getting the Mobi so that review is perfect, will check it out in a sec.

Personally I don`t game and disable swap entirely so can`t be of much help. But what I`d probably do in your situation is stick the os/games on one ssd, swap on the second ssd and data on the sammy.

Then if you have spare cash to burn get a veloci for the fun of it and play around trying diff configs to see what situation works best.

RAID0 your SSD's with a decient hardware RAID, put your swap on your HD and ull be on fire.

dont want to waste space/access time on cache files and hibernation files :)

decent hardware raid

Can someone suggest a decent hardware raid controller?

I want to use it for either 2 or 4 drives (2 pair). The first are WD 3200AAKS and the second a pair of 32GB Samsung SLC SSD.

There is 150GB V-Raptors due in Aug.

Incase you did not know the NEW Firmware on V-Raptor 300GB's over the Engineering Samples Firmware reviewed by the websites takes the drive to 110/MB/sec Avg Sus Read up from 103/MB/Sec Avg Sus Read.
