Im asking this here since gamers are more likely to have experienced these problems but I might have to ask in the Connectivity forums too.

Is there anyone here unfortunate enough to have Pipex as their ISP and that uses Ventrilo regularly?

As of late, I have experienced some really bad connections to my vent server which is professionally hosted. Other people connecting to it from other ISPs dont have a problem - just me and my housemate. Ive done more troubleshooting on this and the prime suspect is Pipex and their packet shaping.

Does anyone else here have experience with this? If so, how did you get around it?

I use pipex, and have never experiencing these issues on Vent or Teamspeak.

Possibly your router settings?

I use Pipex and run a dedicated Vent Server which is on 24/7. Some nights up to 5 or 6 of us join the Vent Server and have no problems at all and its been going since November 06.

I had a small problem last night which was cured by rebooting my router.

Hmmm :/

My housemate also uses Teamspeak and that works fine. I can even use the MSN messenger voice coms thing and that also works perfectly.

The problem only seems to come when using ventrilo. I suspect it will also only happen during peak times when their packet shaping is used but I'll need to test this over the weekend since the only time on during the week is peak times :(

The ping showing on the Vent client will shoot up and down for no reason, sometimes even going up to 60k pings whilst other pings to WoW and other servers are the usual expected ones.

This problem only started around a month or so ago and there are a few other people that have reported this online, a few of them on the ventrilo forums.

I'm no longer with Poopex as of yesterday \o/

I used to get really unstable gaming pings and shoddy TS performance at times though. Using WinMTR to tracert to the destination server showed ridiculous packet loss (60%) at the first Poopex hop. I would have to disconnect then reconnect repeatedly until I got a different first hop and the issues would dissappear.

Pipex do suck >.>

Only reason we still have Pipex is because its not my house and my restarded housemates are too stupid to switch because they say its cheap :(

I know for a fact they use packet shaping on their network and people seem to think that this is responsible for pings going mental for no reason.

The voice packets seem to be held up somewhere on the network for no reason. People will be talking fine and then Ill see their icon light up in vent but I wont hear them speak. Then, seconds later or sometimes minutes, I hear their entire conversation back to back... Its rather annoying receiving 10 questions all at once without getting a chance to answer them :P

get of pipex as fast as you can, not only does their network suck, and they throttle your connection all the time, they have some of the rudest customer service ppl you could ever find.

I had vent problems also when i was with pipex, a new ISP fixed the problem :)

Pipex are rubbish, but locked into them till later in the year... :( Although ive called up more times than I can remember and most of my problems are now sorted.

Try making sure everyones silence time on Vent is 0.5 Seconds (found in setup) which will take some load off your connection and should make Vent more responsive.

I only tend to get problems with Vent if im downloading big files, the ping tends to go up and up. But ive used it with 5 people connected while playing Battlefield 2142 with no problems and a good ping all on a 2mb line.

Markyb download over 70 gigs monthly and they'll ask you to leave and weaver the fee.

I'm with Pipex, And the only reason I'm with them still is the service has been free for nearly 3 months now.

I can handle the throttling, As I use Utorrent with encryption + Private trackers. :)

I'll be honest, The service sucks, But when it's free it allows me to see the service with new eyes. :p

Yes, I have a Pipex 8mb connection. Yes, I use Ventrilo a lot. Yes, i've had problems.
Getting annoying, some cut outs. Ping jumping to 5000 sometimes.

Definitely trying your suggestion markyb
EDIT: what do you mean by silence time? I see number of packets to buffer with choice of 0-5 for 1.voice stream starts 2.voice stream interrupted
Do i have a old version?

Im using Ventrilo 2.3.0.
You need to change the settings within the Client, not the server.

Load the Client and click Setup...

Make sure the Silence time is 0.5, this needs to be applied on all clients who connect to make a big difference. Just tell your mates to set it up over vent.

Holy ISP's!! Am I the only one here who uses Pipex and has no beef with them?? I've been with them for 3 years, and the connex has been rock steady. My recent upgrade took place fast and without a hitch.

Cant comment on the customer service, as I've never had a reason to call them up!

BTW, before I get flamed to death, i'm fully aware of the overall opinion of Pipex. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Also, I use Vent, TS and the MSN speaky speaky thing - never had any problems at all. Fingers crossed.

been with pipex for nearly 3 years myself.
only had a problem one time because my conn was very slow. i phoned up and things were ok the next day :)

connection has been ok apart from that day, even with 3 active gamers in the house in the same server and on voice comms.

yep been with pipex for a long time even back in the 56k days and connection has been solid, think they are one of the best and as for customer support i've been well happy but one thing for sure the customer support will not stand for dummies weather this is bad or not, but most answers to questions are on there web site thats why they prob get fed up of silly billys all day long.

bye the way not saying anyone here is asking silly questions or is a dummy thought id just clear that up :D.

Just what I was thinking. :D

Used them since 1995 and had very few problems. The couple I have had have been sorted very quickly and known problems get posted promptly so you're not in the dark. Lost my webspace last week for a few hours but the info was all there.

I did have some probs with Vent on Pipex but it seemed to sort itself out so I didn't worry too much. Have been thinking about switching but like others here i'm locked in for another 6 months at least.
