What exactly is the point of verified by visa?

Just ordered a a monitor, graphics card off OcUK and instantly it was declined by Verified by visa, no option to input the password just instantly declined every time with all information correct, never have an issue anywhere else but I guess OcUK isn't on their 'list', but with no option to input my password so what was the point setting up a password in the first place?

Made sure it wasn't me, used a few different browsers etc same issue.

I couldn't do the order over the phone at the moment but helpful of OcUK to offer that though so went through paypal and paid with the same card and it was processed instantly.

If I was using this card fraudulently Verified by Visa would have done nothing to prevent it, it's only purpose was making the order more complicated than it needed to be and put me off visa!

Needed to get that off my chest ;)

I had similar the last time I ordered from ocuk even though I had ordered from them multiple times in the past.

I received an automated phone call asking me to verify it was a legit transaction.
then it told me to retry again in a few minutes...

order just wouldn't go through so used a diff card.

Happened to me in the store before Christmas. Lloyds Bank simply decided it was worth checking out. I have had 5 such issues in 3 months and frankly I am all for fraud prevention, but it needs to be done better than it is at the moment.

Yup i hate it too. 9/10 times i have to go through "forgot my password" even though i know my details.. But, it wont recognize my password. so every time i pay something online, i go through the forgot password route. Knowing it wont accept my password details.

maybe a system glitch. wouldnt surprise me if the default was to decline if there was a problem, would be more beneficial rather than allowing you by the verification but the vendor receives no funds and/or order.

Only time I have ever had a problem it was the vendors system that wasn't working properly.

I haven't had to put in my VbV password for ages now, it just comes up with the box saying processing then goes through.

if you use the same site from the same IP a lot i think it remembers you?

Verified by Visa was optional with my bank, it certainly was not forced although some banks make you take without a choice, i choosed to take it for the extra security.:)

3D Secure (aka Verified by Visa / Mastercard Secure thingy) is annoying but companies can save so much card no present fraud that I don't really begrudge it, I don't want the thieves to win.

The newest version of 3DS can have profiling on it but only certain banks support this I believe. It's more intelligent (but not that much more :) ), eg if you buy from OCUK every 2 years for an upgrade it will realise this, certain purchases will no longer require you to enter the code because you goto site X every 4 months etc...

I'm sure those complaining would be the first to complain if their bank account was compromised due to a lack of security when purchasing items.

It is like a condom, Id rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

The point is online card fraud is rife and 3D Secure (Verified by Visa and Mastercard SecureCode) allows your bank to perform extra checks to try to combat it. From what you've said, I don't know how you came to the conclusion that it was 3D Secure that caused the problem. It's just as likely that the bank declined your transaction regardless of the merchant offering Verfied by Visa, because they were suspicious of it.

That said, 3D Secure does frequently cause issues. The problem is the page where you enter your password is actually hosted by your own bank, and these pages often seem to go down with some banks. If that happens to you, the solution is to switch banks.

From the e-commerce company's perspective, the reason to use 3D Secure is because it removes their liability for fraud. So by OcUK using 3D Secure, they rarely lose out when someone places a fraudulent order.

Never had a problem with both my HSBC cards.
Set it up when I first did an online shopping for each card and been fine since.
Its a pita to enter my password every time I use it online but I guess its an added level of security.

An OcUK competitor beginning with "e" used to always trigger a fraud call from Natwest, but I've never had an issue since I've bought from here.

I always wondered, is there a online transaction threshold level where you are forced to use these systems does anyone know? I imagine the amount of fraud cut down is fairly decent so there must be some break point for the merchant and/or the banks (assuming it costs a decent chunk to implement / operate this extra verification)

Automatic red flag by the sounds of it. They use various automated systems that attempt to track your card use and create a card profile in order to try and reduce fraudulent purchases on your card. Could be a hiccup in the system. Likewise it could be a precursor to a more serious issue. IE your issuer has blocked your card due to possible fraud elsewhere. Mine got blocked after someone in Greece got my card details and bought airline tickets. I didn't find out until I tried buying a £6.50 pair of novelty socks for my then girlfriend that got declined. Found out they had emptied my account and it was Christmas Eve and I was trying to do my Christmas shopping. Fortunately my girlfriend lent me some money so I could get some gifts for the family.

Can be frustrating, and annoying but I like to know they have my back.

This, EVERY time. I don't get what is so hard to design a good system!

Been doing my nut in for years.
