Can anyone explain why the newer V4 uses Indilinx Everest 2 controller over the SandForce SF-2281 of the V3. The V3 240GB model shows 550MB/Sec and 525MB/Sec for read and write speeds respectively.

In contrast, the V4 256GB shows 535MB/Sec res and a write speed of 380MB/Sec.

The V3 seems a better deal or have I missed something?

I'm guessing less problems with the Controller Chip that have plagued the SF-2281. :)

Not that really know if the Indilinx Everest 2 is better than the SF-2281 since it's not been around long enough for problems to show up. :P

Has substantially better Iops and 4k performance, which pertains to much better 'real world' performance. Also the bootup, loading time benchmarks on some reviews reflect this.

ocz have bought out indilinx hence they are using that controller now,its higher i/o per second on the vertex 4

Hi Huddy,

The SF2281 only achieves these peak read and write speeds with massively compressible data (for example, as used by the Atto bench, which uses all zeroes test data). The achilles heal for an SF2281 based SSD is with incompressible random data, such as used by video files. The new Everest 2 controller massively outperforms the SF2281 with incompressible data and with 46% compressible data (which is typical for apps). Thus the new controller is a better all round solution, particularly I feel in real world use.

Also, note that the S2281's write speeds for incompressible data take a significant fall once each physical block has been written to once.

The headline performance numbers can sometimes be quite misleading when it comes to real world performance :)

Definetly V4, more than likely a much more stable controller (though to be fair, since the last firmware updates i've had not one issue with the Sandforce ones) and better overall performance.

My agility 3 freezes and BSODs all the time... actually ridiculous.. even on latest firmware, BIOS etc (I've tried everything). I'd go for the Vertex 4 :P Gonna get one myself soon I believe if the Intel 520 or Crucial M4 isn't a better deal for whatever reason.

can be mb bios too? using intel or marvel ports?

Would anyone recommend the V4 over the M4?

Yes - I would.

Here is an AS SSD run against a V4 256GB running as a boot drive on my P67 rig. The V4 trim functionality is immaculate and reliablity/compatibility appears to be excellent.

The V4 is surely the fastest thing in town curently!

p.s. in my lappy (Dell XPS 17) the V4 hits 985 in AS SSD (remarkable for a laptop)

Hi jaju,

I notice that OCZ has very recently released new firmware (2.22) - I feel it would be worthwhile giving this a go. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/f...0944-FW-2-22-is-now-live-and-ready-for-update

By the way, I also suggest that you detach your Agi 3 for 20-30mins, clear your CMOS thoroughly, and then reattach your Agi 3. This will ensure that your drive is reenumerated and that you dont carry forward the affects of a previous point of failure.

Somewhere in this FORUM someone said that the new sandisk extreme was the fastest ssd on the planet?

Im stuck between the Vertex4 or Sandisk extreme but also heard that crucial have a m5 due out in a few weeks so might wait and see

I've got the V4, and with over 66gb used from (120 after formatting) 128gb, I get the same read write speeds 460/200 mb/s as when it was freshly formatted.

AFAIK the SandForce (V3) driver suffer a big speed drop when the drive is over half full?

I dont think so delpy. Isn't the SD Extreme just another SF 2281 drive? (i.e. just like the Vertex 3)

dont provide false information to people if your clueless. the vertex 4 uses a marvell controller.

Hi Cyber-Mav,

You are right but as I understand it OCZ has its own 'Indilinx infused' firmware that isn't available from other system integrators.
